Hello all, I have posted just about the same thing on the welcome page but I though I would try this spot out also. I have been wanting to pick up the sport of coyote hunting with hounds. I have came across sites of guys who do it and sell dogs. I just don't want you go out and buy hounds and not have a clue of what I need to do. What I am trying to say is I am trying to get my feet wet when it comes to running them with hounds. If anyone runs them with the hounds and don't mind if I tag along I would love to go and see if it is worth the time and money it would take to get started. Thank you Tim

coyotekiller81,
First off - WELCOME to Hunting Indiana.
We have a bunch of predator hunters on here.
Not to sure how many chase them with dogs, but there could be some.
I'm sure one or two of them will be along shortly to answer your questions.
Enjoy the forum..

Hounding coyotes is something that would be very hard to get into without a helpful mentor. The equipment and knowledge required for safely and effectively hounding coyotes is a pretty deep subject- it's an uphill climb without a friend in the field.
Aside from equipment and knowledge you will find that dogs can be tough to start without assistance. You have buy the best bloodlines out there and hunt them continuosly but until you put him alongside a WELL TRAINED dog he's just magnifying his own bad habits. Pups need mentors just like new hunters, I'd strongly suggest finding someone willing to help you out before you invest heavily in the sport.
Also, when you do take the leap and get yourself a pack going- please be courteous and cautious with landowners and other sportsmen. Hounding coyotes is a very volitile thing in many areas, when I'm getting permission to call coyotes across the state I often year "YOUR NOT GOING TO RUN THOSE DA## DOGS ARE YOU?!?!". This tells me that many landowners have a bad taste in their mouth from someone in the past screwing them around.... you will see similar angst amongst some sportsmen online who had bad experiences with houndsmen. Please keep this in mind- the sport needs all the new blood it can get to ensure it's future, but they must project a positive image of the sport as well!!!
Good luck;

Hunting coyotes with hounds presents its own set of unique problems.Some have been mentioned above.I would like to elaborate a bit. It takes a large amount of land to run dogs on.It is not like coon hunting ,rabbit hunting,or squirrel hunting with dogs.A coyote has a extreme amount of endurance and can flat run,for miles if need be,and usually do.In my area it is impossible to get enough adjacent landowners to give permission to run dogs.It may be different where you live,but worth consideration on your part.No matter how hard you try,the dogs and yotes will invariably cross on to land that is off limits.Not trying to talk you out of it,just giving you some food for thought.For the reasons mentioned, I turned to calling them in.If you do decide to go with dogs,find a houndman you can trust.The dog traders will skin you alive if given the chance!Not much skin left on my backside!LOL!!!

CK81...You are in an area that has several coyote trappers. HNF may be a viable place to run dogs, but huge tracks of lane East of you are being trapped for yotes for live market. Be diligent in your effort to know what is happening on the ground you get and surrounding land. Trappers don't want dead yotes and houndsmen don't want injured dogs.

Yeah I was thinking of HNF but I have alot of land down south towards Washington County. It is not the land for hunting that I have the prob with. It is getting started and finding someone who I can go with a few times to see how it goes. I am not even sure it is going to be something I would spend the money on. But thanks for the info guys, like I said I need all I can get.
