Do you think turkeys go through a "pre rut" and a "rut" like deer. First couple of days the turkeys were hammering and now we are lucky to hear one one the roost. It's not just our property. We can hear two other properties that border ours and hearing zero gobbling in the tree let alone after fly down. The two neighbor properties don't get hunted at all. Heck we can't even get them to shock gobble. Usually hunt the last week of the season and have good gobbling. Never hunted this early.

I don't know but I have had similar thoughts. Youth weekend and last weekend they were talkative for us early although they seemed to quiet down fairly quickly.

Just seems to me they are in a lockdown with hens as stupid as it may seem. We can hear over 1000 acres and no gobbling at all.

I say it every year. Indiana's season is about two weeks too late. Our season starts as the peak gobbling period is starting to wind down. Nobody listens to me though.

I usually hunt the last week and never have it this quiet. I agree though. Week earlier opening and it'd get nasty.

I would call the 6th-9th at my house the first peak gobbling. While I was putting my boy on the bus there were birds gobbling everywhere around and birds in both my yard and my neighbors at some point every day. After that it has gradually gotten quiet.
An earlier season is not going to happen unless we get a different biologist. This one knows what he is doing.

Wait a week when hens start sitting on nest...things are gonna get good..last year i took my son-in-law out on the last day of season...the woods was on fire, gobbling everywhere...we called 2 birds up and he shot a nice longbeard on the last day of season....best day of hunting last year for us.

Hunt the afternoons when the hens are done. I love last weekend of our season, when I have called in some big old birds. Or do like my Kentucky friends do, don't hunt when they get tight lipped lol
