Looking at satellite maps of various Indiana bodies of water on various GIS map sites (such as beacon.schneidercorp.com ), I can overlay property lines and then click on various properties to view the owner of said properties. Looking at the West Lakes chain which dump into a branch of the Elkhart River, there are points downstream of Waldron lake that show private owner properties actually extend across and encompass the river / channel - which would give one the impression that these sections of the Elkhart river are privately owned (as the map and property lines show it). My question is: are these parts of the river, where private property lines extend completely across it, privately owned or is the entire river system and all its branches technically DNR property / state owned and open for public use? How much of the shoreline inland from the water's edge in these areas is considered to be easement & also belongs to the state?

Landowners may own land on both sides of a river. The water is still owned by the state. The property between the normal high water marks can be utilized by the public.
