I just looked out my Bedroom Window and saw three good sized Toms, about 25 yards away, grazing in my back field. I quietly open my window, got my 20 gauge out and was ready to bag one. When the "Moment-Of-Truth" came-up; I just didn't have the Heart to shoot one. The looked so beautiful and peaceful this morning and I just couldn't see myself shooting one. Now I know I will probably get "ribbed" for not taking the shot, but that is okay as I am not really a "Bird Hunter". If it were a nice Buck, during Deer Season, then I would have harvested it, or if I was sitting in the woods Squirrel Hunting; then I have have no problem in harvesting my limit of Squirrels. Thus far I've been watching several Turkeys (mostly Hens) walking and feeding in my back field, and these three Toms have been well within shooting range. Not hearing much gobbling at all this Spring as opposed to last Spring. To all Turkey Hunters I hope you bag your Tom, as I am not against Hunting Turkeys just that I can't shoot one myself. If I want a Turkey to eat then I'll "bag" mine at Krogers or Walmart. ~GOOD LUCK GUYS!

You sound like me. My son is out hunting, as I type this. Every year he asks me if I want to go, and every year I tell him no. Just not in to turkeys. Like you, if it don't say "butter ball", I ain't into it. Even then, I don't much like turkey to eat. Deer and squirrels yea! I'll leave the turkeys for my fellow nimrods..... maddog

Just like deer hunting, it is more about the hunt than the meat...
If I get a chance to hunt and spend some time with my son I'm all for it..
I'll be 76 in June so I'm not sure how many hunting seasons I have left in this old body... Make hay while the sun is shining ..

No ribbing from me; I may have even told this story before. Down in KY X number of years ago I had a doe at 300yds with the rifle held on her 5-10min before quitting time. Had her dead to rights with a solid shooting position. I whispered "bang" and packed it in. I just didn't feel like taking her and recovering/dressing her in the dark. (I had a couple already so that may have made a difference too; although I usually can use 3)

Woody you might have several more years left in you. I called a bird in for my Grandfather and he killed it. His first turkey at the young age of 82. He's now 94. And still has the desire to go this year. He's had some medical problems this winter that has slowed him down. Hope to be able to get him out before seasons end.

Seventy-six is amazing; I'll NEVER see 60 on this side of the grass.

No ribbing from me! If I were in your shoes I don't know if I would have pulled the trigger either.
But, in my travels the next few weeks I will keep the shotgun in the car/truck "Just in case".

Well if you ever need me to come down and defend your house from those dangerous marauders you know who to contact. I don't discriminate.

I won't say that I wouldn't bushwack a tom, I have in the past, but if I had my "druthers" I'd much rather call 'em up. It's the interaction with those old birds that keeps me going back to the woods each spring.

However, I sure would have jumped out of my truck and shot the one on Tuesday if it had been Wednesday. Sure, I would have needed a nap after the jumping part, but I would have done it.

The two most memorable and challenging turkeys I ever killed in involved ambush with a long stalk and ending in a lengthy belly crawl in an open field. Those two birds mean MUCH more to me than any of the many I have sat still and called to me...because I know how unlikely it was for me to pull it off that way. It certainly takes skill to sit and consistently call turkeys in to kill, but it takes another kind of skill to go to them and get it done.

A fella told me a story about his greatest moment turkey hunting, and he saw or heard a turkey moving in a direction on a ridge. He was on another ridge. He managed to get to that ridge and ahead of that tom and got his bird. Oh, I don't do well on one flight of stairs, but man if I could I'd be a ridgerunner.

During deer season, I have does moving down my south fence line. 50 yard shot from my porch. No way will I take that shot. I get your mind set drs. I also really get metamora's point. Hunting is many things to many people, but to me it is scouting and stalking first and foremost. It isn't a free shot that you didn't create through work and planning. Just my opinion.....

It is "making meat" but it isn't hunting.
I have no problem with anyone "making meat"....

I would be stupid to project them to other people. BTW, I showed your KY bird picture to my wife and she guessed you were 56 years old. Not giving her your phone number......

Exactly..I just got back from a trip to Missouri with my son...I wouldn't miss it for the World...Never take life for granted, if my son wanted me to sit and knit a sweater with him, I'd be there...it's about " the time".
