Watching a doe and a minutes old fawn! Fawn still wet and wobbly legged! Awesome! That is amazing - we called it a day.

Real disappointed today. Got to the lease around 5:40. Set up where we saw the three toms yesterday on the assumption that they roosted in the area. Darrin set up on the west side of the woods and me on the east. Started calling around 6:20. Called off and on until 10:00. Got a response at around 300 yards to the south after an hour or so. Sounded like he halved the distance quickly. Got optimistic. Then he was gone. 30 minutes later saw 3 hens coming across a field from the direction of his location. I expect that he was taking a rest or smoking a cigarette.......Put a fork in him. He was done, for the time being. Darrin and I will be back next weekend for a Hail Mary hunt

I was out early today, but didn't hear or see any.
I did talk with a fella in the woods who said he heard that Saturday was a good day for turkey in this forest.
I'll be back at it tomorrow.

One gobble today, not one gobbler, one gobble. I have never in 28 years turkey hunting experienced it this quiet. No idea what's going on. They aren't even gobbling on the roost anymore.

I am still on the mend from pneumonia. So zero turkey hunting from me so far. But I am getting reports from some local friends up here in NE Laporte county area. Little to no gobbling, little sightings, BUT, two guys now said they have seen eggs in the nests already. I have driven our backroads quite a few times and could literally count the strutters on one hand. Not good. We had two horrible winters in a row and I got a stinking suspicion we lost a good amount of birds due to that. We have a great abundance of rabbits and some squirrels, so I don't think it is a coyote problem. Our weather has still been cold and windy for this time of year so that's not helping. I may get to go out Sunday morning so I will keep my fingers crossed. It is supposed to rain, and the last day and rain have both been very lucky for me in the past, so we'll see.

I don't know much, but I know I don't like them being quiet. It's difficult for me to sit all day and not hear a gobble or shot. I like to hear something to keep my interest. I do enjoy sitting in the woods, especially in my Tahoe, LOL, but... Whatever it is, I'm thinking it's wide spread. I'll drive with a little speed through the handicap road to see if I can catch another one on the move, but none since the one before opening day. With it being the last week, I'll keep dragging myself back out there, but it's getting more difficult. Not being able to see more than 30yds, I'd sure like to hear one.

I don't sit unless I'm working one. Won't hunt a field either. Put a lot of miles on my boot this year. They shut down last Sunday and its been getting worse day after day. I hunt a huge farm, all woods, and surrounded by the same. Zero gobbling. Fields hold zero birds. I've dealt with periods of quiet in years passed, but nothing like this.

I am not a Turkey Hunter, but since the season opened down here in KY; I've seen eight "Long Beard" Toms. Four out in my back field, and the remainder near my Deer Hunting spots. Last one I saw in full strut was last week out in my field. Must add that I've haven't heard or noticed much gobbling.

Hunting Washington and Lawrence counties. I have hunted every day of the season and it just got progressively worse in both counties. I know both properties I hunt are loaded with birds so that isn't the problem. Heck I even went out to Hoosier national the other morning and stood on a high ridge that's always good for gobbling. One bird. Both properties I hunt, the Washington one especially, are LOADED with hens. Looks like a trip in the fall is in order. I hate killing hens but I think it has come to that point. Deer season last year I located to separate flocks on the Washington property. Each had no less than 25 birds in it. None were gobblers. Granted some would have been first year Jakes but that's still a massive amount of hens for one property even after dispersal. The first two birds we worked on opening day of youth, we got cut off by hens. The bird my boy killed was joined by a hen while we were working it. Luckily we called the hen in and she brought the gobbler to us.

span870, Just interested, where are you hunting in Lawrence County? I am on 140 acres on Harrodsburg road. It is about 2.6 miles west of 37. I turn on Washboard road and it becomes Judah-Springville road. Turn north on Harrodsburg Rd. Less than a half of a mile from the turn. Have heard 4 male birds and seen 3. Couldn't get them close enough. Saw three hens running across a field. That is it for me. Last Sunday was real quiet.

If they ever start to get on your nerves, let me know. Ky must have plenty of birds with a two bird limit. I've yet to hear one while hunting this year, but I'll give it another try tomorrow. Think about shooting one. I think you'd like it.

I had a good farm in springville to hunt just never got around to hunting it. It was off of popcorn road. Still kick myself for not taking him up on that offer but I really have enough to keep me happy.

Good luck for the rest of the season and thanks for the reply.

Birds are funny...they move from place to place year after year....and then some stay on certain properties year after year...My family's farm was loaded with birds one year and the next, they are a mile north, or south, then back they year after, turkey's move around a lot...but you'd think you guys would at least hear gobbling...Hens can ruin the game for sure..I have a spot loaded with hens and it's frustrating early season...I'd say keep at it, if birds are in the area, it will happen even if they aren't gobbling...Persistence and Patience fills a lot of tags.

I appreciate the encouragement. I wish they would make some noise just to get me excited. Not being able to see very far, I'm afraid to take a nap ...motion detector is the answer.

In tough years when I know there are birds in an area, but I'm not hearing gobbling...I locate a feeding area, grassy fields, clover fields, wheat fields etc..as long as I'm confident birds are in the area ( tracks , sign etc), I will set up a ground blind and a decoy in these areas...then I will hunt a half day from sun up until noon calling every 20 minutes..Sometimes during work weeks, I will hunt these area in the afternoons until dark...killed many birds using this method of hunting..not as exciting as gobbling off the roost hunting, but better than eating tags IMO....and very effective on killing birds. Gobblers don't gobble every day, that doesn't mean they aren't in the area...you could have a bird around you at any time, he just doesn't wanna gobble that day for whatever reason..When we called my daughter bird in last Saturday...not one gobble all morning...using the above method we had a bird on the ground by 9am..
