Yes through state nursery. Bundle's of 100 pines were 38.00 each I believe but I also bought some persimmon, pawpaw, and oaks that's why it was 150.00 How did you get a hold of them? I have tried several times and the Website always is down. I always just call Trophy Paradise Habitat Consulting "Trophies are built from the ground up" www.facebook.com/trophyparadise

Yes, I just called the Vallonia office (812)358-3621 and did order over the phone. Considered fall planting but they only take orders from Feb 1 through May 1st so spring it is. I plan on fence enclosing all the fruit and nut bearing trees but the pine's will be on their own. Like I said if I get 40%- 50% of them to survive I will consider it a success. With all the new browse form logging 3 year's ago and some 10-12 acre's of food plot's I am fairly confident that the pine's won't be high on the food preference list?? Time will tell. I will take some before and after pic's. Will be interesting to see how they will do over time.

After some thought and discussion with a nursery owner I have decided I am going to use black corrugated pipe on the pines for a protectant. He recommended keeping them covered until they reach 2.5' to 3'ft then remove. Once they establish their root systems they can handle some browsing. He said I will lose some but the majority would survive. So I am buying a roll of the pipe and cutting down to 3' piece's. He said as long as I got them covered before fall that I shouldn't have much of a problem with deer browsing on them over summer.

Just got home and gonna start putting tree's in the ground. Gonna buy some chicken wire also and see which works the best. The red pines I got are probably 3' tall already but the white pines are maybe 1.5'. The hardwoods about 3 ft as well. taking off work tomorrow and a buddy coming over to help. Hoping to get the majority planted and will work over the summer to cage or add protector's before this fall.

Throbak, I'm hoping since our wooded land was logged 3 year's ago that they won't browse on the pine's that much? Also have an abundance of food plot's so again gonna give the pine's a try. Getting from state nursery so pretty inexpensive. Sound's like I will go with 20' spacing and offset so I can bush hog first 2 year's. I have another 1.5 parcel that with 20' spacing I can try to establish some tree's there as well. Thought I would probably have to water some this summer and have a 500 gallon water tank that will fit on tractor carry all or back of pickup when needed. Have a tree spade to plant but will look into getting the root gel. Thanks for input. Hopefully 10-15 year's from now I will have some decent tree's survive. Don;t count on it...I planted 150 conifers 10 years ago...deer pulled up and ate every last one of them the very first year, no tree survived even a year...put tubes around them or they'll be eaten by deer.

Steve said he would never plant pines @ 3' tall this time of the year, and they would need to be watered a lot during the Summer Months, if dry. Best time for planting pines of any variety is in the fall, as they become better established over the winter. Also, He said it would been better is you would have planted American Holly, as they provide a fine break plus provide berries & cover for birds and other species, and can be planted in March, at the latest. However, they would cost you more so they would have to be within your budget. Another good tree would be American Red Cedar, and it would require the least amount of care. ~just my suggestion, but whatever species of tree you choose, good luck.

I've planted about 25,000 trees on my place. Almost all have been planted in the spring without much trouble, and I've never watered. Never had much trouble with deer eating white and red pines, but they will nip off the hardwoods and shrubs. Seedlings are cheap, just plant a ton of them and plan on some loss.

I have been following a bio fuel harvest at SEIPAC they also found overwhelming them with browse helps also kill the fescue but then let the seed bank grow hides your trees it helps

Whew... spent about 5 hour's this morning planting. Got approx. 150 of the pines in the ground. Ended up using a post hole auger as some of the root systems were nearly 2' to 2'6 long so the auger made quick work of the holes. After much thought I think I am just gonna wire cage everything. I got about half the tree's staked ( using old tobacco sticks) and am going to just buy chicken wire for the cages. Rainy weather next couple days so going to get started putting cages up tomorrow beginning with the white pines. Had to plant in spring as seedlings were only available from Mar 1 to May 1. I have a 250 gallon tank so watering won't be a problem if we have a very dry summer. Pretty labor intensive but nothing we can't handle. Hope to have everything in the ground and caged by next weekend.

Got 40 more in ground rounding 3rd and heading for home with less than 100 to go. Weather has put a halt to planting as it is to wet. Chicken wire is hard on the hand's and arm's.... but hope to get this project finished this weekend or first week. Got a couple food plot's to redo and it's time to fertilize and get some spraying done on existing plot's. On the flip side and seeing lot's and lot's deer and turkey's while I have been out. Will post some pic's once I get finished.

Going to finish up this weekend on tree's. Probably wait a couple week's but want to spray around cage's to kill grass and competing weeds. Since I want the area's I planted trees in to be used as bedding areas I am not going to mow but instead let grow up with grass or whatever else pops up. When spraying around cage's would it be best to use a low dose application of roundup or other herbicide? Any advice??? Thanks.

Well the project is near completion. Just a few more cages and 20 or so more hardwood's to go. I am picking up a load of mulch this weekend and am going to get some extra to mulch around all the trees. Should help choke out weeds and grass and help to retain ground moisture. Havn't decided on herbicide yet? Have some Fusiloge (grass killer) also have round up. Friend that has nursery said he use's round up but use's a low dose and works fine.

All planted and caged. Took 2 weeks because of all the rain. Spraying around cages is next.Per conversation with a friend that has planted 1000's of tree's I was told not to mulch around tree's as moles would move in during winter for cover and eat the tree root's and bases. So no mulch. Glad this project is over as it turned into a little more work than I thought. LOL
