I just got this in the mail. Anyone else get one?
I don't hunt small game or trap so they won't get a lot of information from me.
You squirrel hunters in here should have got this instead of me..

This is a every year thing here in Minnesota, I thought it was a voluntary thing. My CO stopped in to check bear in my cooler during bear season and I asked him about this, he said that it was mandatory and if you never sent them in and the DNR caught onto it or decided to push the issue that a individual could loose their hunting privilege's!!

What a jerky thing for the state to threaten law abiding hunters with.

I filled out what little I could and attached the following... To the IDNR DFW, I’m sorry that I cannot be of more help for you but I quit small game hunting (rabbits and quail) a long, long time ago. As I see it, there are numerous reasons for lack of small game…. The extreme blizzard of 1977 pretty well killed off a lot of the small game in southern Indiana. I don’t think quail ever did recover from it. The farmers tearing out fence rows and cutting down woodlots. The ever growing amount of predators – coyotes and hawks. The emphasis on deer hunting locks up a lot of ground and locks out a lot of small game hunters. Leasing of larger acreage by just a few hunters. I did sponsor a “Squirrel Contest” on my website and that was great success for the participants. See… hunt-indiana.com/thread/50780/hunting-indiana-eighth-squirrel-contestThanks, Woody Williams

Woody. Good for you sending in good feedback. And you named a few of the reasons why the numbers of small game and small game hunters are diminishing.
Although the number of rabbits I've seen at the local fish and wildlife area seems ok or good. I have driven the Bluegrass F&W areas road and have been seeing lots of rabbits along the roads. If you drive these roads near sunset you will see lots of wildlife and many rabbits. And yes there are many coyotes and foxes out there too. But nature has a way of bringing balance to the predator/prey populations. They may cycle up and down over the years with the prey population increasing followed by the predator population increasing behind with a lag period of time. Then the prey population gets eaten and goes down which is followed by the predator population going down. When the Predator Population decreases the prey population rebounds and grows larger. Then the cycle repeats itself.
But you are right on about the lack of habitat IE Fence rows and farmland increasing and wood lots decreasing. Farmer are trying to maximize their crop production and have plowed their land to the max and are not always leaving those fence row travel lands and nesting areas alone.
I didn't receive the survey myself. And I want to hunt coyotes and have hunted rabbits, squirrels and waterfowl in the past when I was young. But these days my health problems has prevented me from getting out in the field as much as I would like. I have to really force myself to get up and get going these days. The heart is still willing but the body is weak.
