If you were to have 1 gun for Coyotes, what caliber would it be and why?
I am looking into getting in to doing some coyote hunting and am looking for advice.
Thanks.

You need two guns. One should be a 3.5 inch 10 or 12 guage shotgun with #4 buck loads and the other should be a "walking around" rifle. Mine is a Savage weather warrior with a 4X16 weaver scope in 243 cal. I am shooting reloads using Imr-4350 and the 70 grain ballistic tip. When calling by day or night when they come in fast and close the shotgun get the nod. If they hang up during day time calling then dial long distance with the rifle. Two man teams work better than one man working alone. Using a decoy during the day is also helpful. Watch your down wind side as they tend to circle.

It's all relative to your calling style but a 22-250 will probably be the best all around choice for calling coyotes in Indiana. Accurate, strong and easy on pelt damage.

A 3.5 12, with #4 turkey loads, or any 223

What kind of range do you get with a 12 ga.? I do have shotguns, the only centerfire I have is a .45/70 (a bit much for a dog :-) )

I'd have to go with the .243 or 6 m/m Remington for hunting coyotes.

If I was stuck to only 1 gun period, it would be a Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 ga. Why: The 12 ga. will take down anything that walks, amo is easially found anywhere they sell amo, it can be used for anything from doves to grizzly with the right loads, & those 870's work forever. I have one in 16 ga. that I have been useing for over 35 years & it is still going strong.

.204 Ruger. Why? Because it shoots like a laser beam! ;D I just sold a 17 HMR and think I will get a .204 NEF Handi-rifle this weekend. 6-7 inch drop at 300 yards......sign me up as it will save my having to buy a rangefinder. Good luck.

My 7mm rem. mag or my 243 will shoot that flat or better and there big enough for bigger game.

Correction.....the 204 will drop 5 inches from muzzle to 300 yards. Bought one yesterday. This afternoon it turned a 200 yard crow into a magnificent explosion of feathers.

Hard to beat a good old .223. Ammo is readily available and inexpensive, and it's a pretty good flat shooter out to 250 yards or so. Go with a bolt action rifle, suggest Remington 700, Winchester 70, Browning A-bolt, or Ruger 77. I'm going to read up on that .204. I find it hard to believe it would amount to much at 300 yards.

Steiny, 2755 f.p.s. and 674 foot pounds with a 40 gr. v-max at 300 yards. This info was taken from Hornady's site.

I prefer my T/C Contender rifle in .223. With Remington 62 grain match HP ammo, it prints sub MOA groups and pops K-9's hard. Besides the Contender is light and easy to hump the hills with.

.308 leaves no questions on impact.
