Sunday was probably the last hunt of the season. It started out really slow. Warm, dry and absolutely no wind. A bird dog's worst nightmare. As a matter of fact, we only had 2 quail out of 30 birds in the first hour. Finally a small breeze kicked in and we were on non stop bird. At one point, I had both dogs locked up on separate birds about 20 yards apart. We opted for Dukes bird first but I positioned Rock's hunters safely to shoot if needed, too. Sure enough both birds busted. Dukes bird down. Rock's...dropped a leg and glided forever toward the banks of the Wabash across a cut cornfield. And away goes Rock. We all just waited to see what would play out. Were we all in for a long walk. Rock locked up where the chukar appeared to go down. One of the gunners ranged him at 552 yards. And then pounce! Rock found dead and retrieved the bird like a pro. I was pretty impressed. It was a great day. A little tougher on Duke, as he went through a few gallons of water. Too warm for the ole shag rug with a nose! All in all, it turned into 27 out of 30 birds in the bag. A lot better than the hunt started out!
