I hunt public lands almost exclusively, and have for 20 years, the number one tip I would add, should be scouting maps...get maps and scout before you get there..if you have some basic woodsmanship skills, you'll know where you need to be way before you show up..find those areas on the maps, mark them...have a plan A, Plan B and Plan C... on Public lands you're gonna have to be flexible...leave the mouth calls at home..every turkey hunter in North America blows a mouth call, especially on Public Lands..Find a good sounding subtle turkey caller, scratchbox, trough call or a nice mellow tone slate call, something not common or readily available..call just enough to let Gobblers know where you are...that's it...subtle feeding purrs and clucks, over calling is a sure way to push a bird away. Be patient..I hunted and killed many birds on LBL in KY....humbling place, but you will learn a lot about turkeys and Public Lands..be a turkey...not Michael Wadell trying to win a NWTF National Championship.

Pack a small bag, take some food go the day before you hunt and scout till you put the birds to bed. Stay put till total darkness, sneak out and sleep in your truck. In the morning be the first one to enter the woods WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY before shooting time get set up then plan on staying until legal quitting time.

Thanks Woody. First year turkey hunting for me. Looks like public land only. All tips are much appreciated. I applied for a reserved hunt. Got my fingers crossed. Featherduster, you are da man! Excellent advice! Jim

Ok I'm just gonna give you a very likely possibility of what would happen on public lands , using the above scenario...so you " sneak out", and sleep in your truck"..... and at 3:30am opening morning you are awakened by door slamming and commotion...you look out the drivers side window of your truck ,trying gather yourself, see two other turkey hunters climbing from their truck..they too had a plan to get to " their spot" extra early to beat everyone else to the "honey hole"...so your scouting trip a day earlier, putting birds to bed and sleeping in the truck plan .....someone just threw a giant monkey wrench in it.....this is where "Plan B" comes in to play..always have a well thought out Plan B, you'll need it.

Plan B is to set fire to the other guys truck just after they get out of sight, they will see the flames and come running back and you now have the woods all to yourself again.
