What the smallest all around round you could use it IN? To kill anything up to coyote....

I've killed a coyote with a .22lr and seen others killed with it. It will certainly get the job done in a pinch but is far from the best choice if you do a lot varmint hunting. I would start my consideration with the .22 mag or .22 hornet if long range is not your goal or where less muzzle blast is important. Otherwise start with the .223.

How do the two .17s do? Could the hmr drop a yote?

When the HMR came out a friend of mine had one and shot a coyote at about 200 yards through the ribs. It ran off unrecovered until he caught it in a trap some time later the wound channel was small and healed up. He said the bullet didn't expand. Another friend also had a 17 HMR in a very accurate CZ and had trouble on groundhogs with it. He said the 22 mag was a better killer. He favors the 243 on coyotes specially at ranges longer than 250 yards. I pick the 221 fireball as the lightest you could use in In. But an old farmer down in southern In. would argue that the 222R is the best coyote killer and has shot over 40 straight with his.

Two years ago I killed several coyotes with my Ruger 10/22 (.22 lr). Last year I hunted them with a .22 magnum and had a HARDER time killing them with it! I have concluded since that if the angle of the shot is good and the 'yote is within ~60 yards a hot, light bullet from a lr will do the job very nicely. Another conclusion is that a .22 magnum should only be used within 100 yards and the animal had better not be quartering to nor straight on. If I were to get a rifle exclusively for coyotes, it would be at least a .204 Ruger and probably a .223 Rem.

I just bought a .17hmr. I've heard mixed results on woodchucks and coyotes. I have a buddy who says his dad can't get it to drop a woodchuck. I find that hard to believe since I've killed a couple with pellet guns before. I've spoke to a couple people who have dropped coyotes with it. They admitted that they were head shots. Heck as accurate as these little guns are, why not head shoo them.
I can't wait to get on an animal with my .17 to try it out. The thing is amazing on the range.

As with any caliber, shot placement is crucial for a good kill. This is even more important with the lighter and smaller calibers. I would have to say that a .223 is an excellent varmint and predator round out to 250/300yds. Beyond that, a 22-250 will get er done to about 450/500.
If you really want to anchor them to the ground but possibly get some pelt damage, I would say go with a 243 or even a 25-06. Bang flops all day long with with those calibers even at long ranges. With good shot placement that is.

I checked out a .223 and .22-250 both today. They were the same price and the bullet diameter is the same, so the major difference is ammo price and power, right? Kind of like a 22mag and a 22lr...

theres a heck of alot more noise from a 22-250. 223 is the best all around in my opinion, plenty of power, discount ammo, less harsh on the ears.

I'm with everyone else the 223 is great allaround gun. BUt for fun and exitment you cant beat runnin dogs for yotes. they will tell you right where they are goin then blast em with the 12 ga and some 00 buck. what a rush.

Another vote here for the .223-it's a great caliber. I have never seen a yote shot by a .223 run very far at all. In fact, the only one that I've seen that did run, was shot with a FMJ, and he was recovered about 200 yards away. The .223 is hard to beat-ammo's cheap, doesn't kick, isn't very loud, and they are pretty accurate (at least mine is).

My T/C Contender rifle with .223 Remington 62 grain match HP will consistently take dogs out to 250 yards. But I'm sure that if you place your shots well, the HP .22 rimfires will kill coyotes too.
