I'm in Mitchell and need straw for bedding. Went through way more than I thought this year. Anyone know of any around that they don't want an arm and a leg for. Anyone ever use hay. I have buddies that swear by orchard grass hay but all I'm finding is mixed with alfalfa or fescue. That make a difference?

The only thing that I can tell you is don't use barley or rye straw. The stuff that I picked up a few years ago had seeds that were just like foxtails, and I was too worried about it working into a dogs ear or between their toes to use it.
Are there any local weekly farmers auctions? There's one in Walkerton every Monday and they usually have straw/hay there.

You may check dinky's over west of you. Every friday night i think they list the items on their web site...just not sure if it will have straw.
I just go to lowes but only buy 4 to 6 bales a year...about $5 per bale. Not sure if can find much straw available around here. Lots of hay. Buy a couple round bales. My neighbor used to bale square but finally changed to rounds this year but always been hay. Don't know types

I baled for several local farmers while in highschool. Loved the straw. One particular guy paid well but his wife fed us even better! Don't think my son will know that kind of work.
