I started out yesterday in an old permanent stand, but it was so creaky I soon abandoned it. The melting snow had made for pretty quiet walking, so I walked down the ridge to where I could overwatch a nice creek bottom. I immediately felt like I made the right decision; it just felt like action was imminent. I picked a nice oak to lean up against and proceeded to gawk around.
I didn't have to wait long. I soon saw a deer crossing the creek below and headed up the hill. I put the gun up against the tree so I wouldn't have to move later and waited hopefully. I lost track of the deer momentarily but soon spotted it again. It wasn't just a deer, it was a buck--and a pretty good one. Soon I had a shot but for once I was patient and waited for the deer to close a little bit. Then it vanished behind a row of cedars! Crap!
I fished out a grunt call and tooted desperately. A few seconds went by. He did not reappear. Then, movement caught my eye. Another buck was coming up the same trail. He was smaller, but he was in range, and keenly interested in the grunt call. When stopped at about 60 yards I put the red dot behind his shoulder and with a solid rest on the oak, squeezed the trigger.
At the shot the buck crouched and began a low trot down the hill, clearly hit hard. Oddly, the first buck re-emerged and ran toward the buck I shot. As my deer slowed and bedded down 30 yards down the hill from me, the bigger deer stood watching it. As I tried to get my camera out of my pocket the bedded buck tipped over and slid down the hill. Again, the bigger buck moved toward it. I snapped a blurry pic of the second deer but you can't see the rack. Could have killed him ten times over.
The 12G lightfield Hybred EXP slug entered at a slight angle, go both lungs, and stopped under the skin on the far side. ( see pic ) It expanded perfectly.
200 feet of rope and several hours later we had the deer on the jeep's hitch haul. I couldn't be happier; after such a hard season I am more than pleased. Like we have said on this forum several times this year, your luck can change in an instant.
The bigger buck approaches the fallen deer, which you can barely see,
The hunter with the world's largest forehead poses with his deer. Remind me to keep my hat on in future pics.
The bulge where the slug stopped.
Lightfield Hybred Exp 2 3/4"
Cut myself field dressing... I cleaned the wound with hand sanitizer and wrapped it with toilet paper and electrical tape. lol
