I am a loose powder guy with my no. 11 caps and musket caps. I am at the point of adding to my front stuffer collections with an Optima pistol. Do the 209 primers respond well to loose powder or do they need the pellets?

I use ffg & fffg with them no problem.

Cool. I just haven't convinced myself that pellets are the way to go. Especially after using actual black powder for the first time last year. I was amazed at the difference in just the sound from pyrodex to black powder. I got hooked quick.

I use 90.0 (Volume) of Triple "7" FFG in my Black Diamond T/C, and always use a 209 primer. Winchester makes a special 209 primer for Triple "7" which is suppose to prevent a build-up of unwanted residue in the breech plug.

I'm not a pellet fan either; I trust the real thing for consistency myself. (fairly or unfairly)

I always use pyrodex powder. 209s work just fine.

I always use pyrodex powder. 209s work just fine. If you try Triple "7" FFG, I believe you'll switch. Nothing wrong with pyrodex FFG, but with Triple "7" you won't have that odor and it is much easier to clean-up your rifles bore & action.

I highly recommend Blackhorn 209 .... I set up an encore last year for dad to use because my savages are too hard for him to load. Decided to try the Blackhorn powder after some reading and glad I did.

Being thrifty (wife calls it "cheap"), I'll shoot up my ample supply of Pyrodex before going to another propellant.
Gotta admit though, the smell is not pleasant!

Decided to try the Blackhorn powder after some reading and glad I did. I agree Blackhorn is a good powder. Was thinking about giving it a try but alas can't find any down where I am in Ky. I've used Triple "7" many years now and it's always worked for me.

Well, pulled the trigger last night and the new sidearm is on the way. I'll try the powders I have (black, pyrodex, triple 7), and it sounds like Blackhorn in the spring.

Powder compatibility with ML's especially inlines, is usually completely dependent on your breach plug design. My breach plug in my Encore and 10ML-II work wonderfully with all BP subs including complete reliability with BH209, especially because I use the hottest 209 primer available the Federal 209. so you must make certain your ML's specific breach plug is compatible with what ever BP sub you wish to choose, preferably BEFORE you buy said bp sub.
My .45 caliber used but LNIB Knight Extreme came with a BH209 compatible breach plug already installed.
I cant recommend BH209 strongly enough, Ive tried 3+lbs 777, 1000's of Pyrodex RS pellets and after only 10 shots using BH209, I gave away ALL my left over 777 and pyrodex, yes BH209 IMHO is THAT MUCH BETTER!!!
