i have been feeding the pond and i knew i had a few duck coming onto it, so i invited my good friend and my lad Stuart to come tonight to have a shot at them. Told them to be here for 6pm expecting the ducks to start coming in around 6.30 pm, we got there at 5.50 pm and twenty seven ducks heard us coming and took off, they had come in early, lol Never mind we got ready in case they came back in. we waited and at 6.40PM two duck appeared Stuart dropped one into the pond and my friend missed, that was it nothing else turned up, so Ellie the twelve year old spaniel and i went to pick the duck up. Ellie the dog is funny, she is not keen on coming to work to stalk deer anymore but she will not miss a nights ducking lol. Suppose when i retire i will want to do as i want as well.
The ducks will be back and we will meet again hopefully at the right time, lol
So my good friend went away with a duck to roast and in return his wife sent me some chocolate cake, a good swap i think.lol regards billy

What kind of ducks do you get over there? Do you guys call them in or use decoys?

greetings chubwub i have mallard and teal on my pond we feed the pond hard with wheat and once we have a flight of duck coming we shoot them as they come in at night. there is no need to call or use decoys with this method. i live near the solway estuary so there is a lot of geese not far from me, we do call and use decoys to bring them into range. geese are pinkfoot, barnacle, greylag and canada, barnacle geese are protected and canadas are seen as a pest species so can be shot all year round. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KsPO6ImcHoregards billy

Do you plant the wheat or just throw it on the water?

It seems you guys have a lot of advantages for waterfowl hunting that we do not have in the US. We are not allowed to feed a pond like you guys nor can we shoot after sunset as I am sure you are probably aware of. Both of those things here in the US would get you in quite a bit of trouble with the law. (I need to grab my fainting couch to recover from the shock of witnessing all your US Fish and Wildlife violations, hehehehe. ) I did notice that you guys appear to have plugs in your guns and steel shot like we do though. What are your firearm restrictions for waterfowl, if any? I am very curious to know why your part of the world prefers to do duck hunting at night (or do you guys just quit right after sunset?) and why you guys hunt the waterfowl the way you do. I would be under the assumption that a well fed pond would bring ducks around at all hours of the day, but perhaps the way they travel is different than over here. The pond feeding is of course pretty self explanatory. What other rules do you have to follow for waterfowling? For example can you use electronic calls?

Sorry for the delay in answering chubwub, I have been away to the Midlands which is two hundred mile south of me partridge shooting. Right Semi auto shotguns can only have a maximum of three shots unless they are on a firearms certificate as opposed to a shotgun certificate. In England all wildfowl have to be shot with steel, but in Scotland one only has to use steel over wetlands, therefore over a barley field one could use lead. We shoot whenever the ducks come to the pond usually it is night as we feed late to get them to come in at night, but sometimes it is early morning. That is inland pond flighting, proper wildfowling is much different, that is on the foreshore on the mudflats usually in awful weather, and one shoots what comes past you, if anything ever does. For that they use ten, eight and four bores as well as the bigger twelve bores. Why do we shoot like that, the honest answer is I don't know, tradition, the way our fathers learned us. Calls, it is illegal to use any electronic device to attract game or wildffowl to shoot, mouth calls or ok. We use electronic calls for foxes. It is illegal to sell wild geese, that is to stop commercial slaughter of the geese. Hope this helps you understand us strange lot over the pond, lol Regards Billy

I'm looking forward to viewing it when I get back. My fiance and I have taken the week off work to do some waterfowling as you call it. Some birds have already met an unfortunate fate this week.

Ducks would be quite effective hunters with this method no? I don't think they are allowed to set full beer mugs out since it is baiting.

Only weak point with that decoy is it is going to be more effective on the young males than the old ones - although I guess we old ones do go in to decline just like the bucks!

I agree the older more settled males will certainly be more decoy shy but you might stand a chance at luring out the dominant female of the pair as a challenge.
