Since Maycee (my buddies daughter) killed a deer Saturday evening and we knew she wouldnt be hunting Sunday evening Rob and I decided to go in and check out one more area and possibly hang a stand before season opens this week.
Its directly on my southern property line .... a short earthen levee on my side of the line running north and south with a line of bur oak trees running down the levee. Acorns falling. Deer scat and tracks everywhere.
On the neighbors property there is 100 acres of beans. 10 acres or so that were planted a month behind the rest and are just as green as can be.
A low wet area that looks like an elk waller.
To the south of the beans are about 500 acres of standing corn that run about 1 mile to the south of my property.
From the earthen levee going into my property is CRP with lots of willow trees and a natural low depression that runs northeast to southwest. Already willow trees up to 5-6" in diameter just shredded .... lots and lots of them.
Easy location to get to without being seen heard or smelled. The southern neighbor does not hunt and lets me park at his machine shed for a 1/2 mile walk down the edge of the beans.
We got a ladder stand wedged up among the trunks of a 4 trunk bur oak that is slightly off the main trails that come up and over the levee. The stand is buried in the trunks enough that I feel I could do jumping jacks and not get busted.
With any variation of a north wind there is no chance any deer will wind me.
If ever there was a place to kill a mature buck in the first week of season this is it.
Unfortunately it looks like the winds on Wednesday and Thursday wont be good but first opportunity I have I will be in that stand.
