Came home last week and couldn't possibly imagine how the sweet potatoes and black beans sitting out on the counter could go together, but my wife made an awesome sweet potato chili. Guess I should be more open minded.

Don't think I'd enjoy this "Venison Pumpkin Chili", sound like it would be too sweet for my taste. I like traditional chili made with ground venison, onions, Brooks Chili Beans, tomato sauce, + few spices.

Came home last week and couldn't possibly imagine how the sweet potatoes and black beans sitting out on the counter could go together, but my wife made an awesome sweet potato chili. Guess I should be more open minded. We need a recipe She modified it by using sweet sausage instead of ground beef and I'm sure venison would work. She didn't use the pepper or chili powder for those of us with reflux. here you go: allrecipes.com/recipe/sweet-potato-chili/ Original recipe makes 8 servings Change Servings 2 sweet potatoes, diced 2 (14.5 ounce) cans diced stewed tomatoes with chili seasonings 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce 3/4 cup diced sweet onion 1/2 cup chopped celery 1/2 cup water 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 pinch salt 1 pinch ground black pepper 1 pinch cayenne pepper 1 pinch garlic powder 1 pinch onion powder 1/2 pound ground turkey 1/2 pound ground beef 1 (12 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup corn Check All Add to Shopping List PREP 30 mins COOK 6 hrs READY IN 6 hrs 30 mins Directions Place sweet potatoes, stewed tomatoes, tomato sauce, onion, celery, water, chili powder, cumin, cinnamon, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder in a slow cooker. Cook on high, stirring occasionally, for 5 hours. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and stir in ground turkey and ground beef. Cook and stir until meat is crumbly, evenly browned, and no longer pink, 10 to 15 minutes. Drain and discard any excess grease. Add cooked ground turkey, cooked ground beef, black beans, and corn to sweet potato mixture in the slow cooker; cook until flavors have blended, 1 to 2 more hours. Serve warm.

I just can't get past placing Sweet Potatoes in Chili. The other ingredients like celery, cumin, & cinnamon just don't seem to be chili ingredients, but there are a million ways to make chili.

It wasn't chili, but it was great! Never would have thought about putting black beans and sweet potato together.

I just can't get past placing Sweet Potatoes in Chili. The other ingredients like celery, cumin, & cinnamon just don't seem to be chili ingredients, but there are a million ways to make chili. It might do similar to what I found out some years back. Not sure and I didn't bother to see if the sw. taters were candied yams or.. Anyway, there is something I NOW add to my home made chili (almost always venison) and I never, EVER would have thought of this one and I experiment a LOT. Just a bit. Added to taste of course, of sweet pickle relish or the liquid from "bread and butter" pickles. <---First preference) MOM always used a small amount of sugar but this tops Mom's recipe IMO (Sorry, Momma......IT'S THE ONLY ONE!) Not a lot put anything sweet in chili and even to me now this sounds ODD and I like my chili "hot" enough to make you sweat but if I don't have the pickle juice to add these days, it does not taste "right". Weird I know but, try a bit in a BOWL so you can add more chili if you over do it. Literally everyone rants over my chili but I know I wouldn't DARE tell them it's had pickle juice added lest they think the ol man has lost it!! God Bless Small notation on the other items. No corn. No cinnamon, No celery. Definitely yes on cumin and dark red kidney beans, not black or chili or red or any other beans. Diced raw onion not flakes or powder. A single tablespoon of chili powder? Wow. About half the jar of "Mexican style" chili powder here. LOTS more meat than above so yep, a million ways to make chili. None can be viewed as "wrong". Sorry about inexact amounts. German momma. I wasn't taught to MEASURE anything. I can't tell you about how much on the black and red pepper. I just add it to start and about 3-4 more times during the "cook, stir and taste" phase. LOL Pickle juice goes in LAST, when the rest is done or has less than a half hour to go, at least for me. My buddy who told me about it puts his in from the start.

ANY tomato based food such as chili, spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce needs a dollop of sugar in it...

ANY tomato based food such as chili, spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce needs a dollop of sugar in it... A little bit of sweeter doesn't hurt and it does "tame" the tomato flavor. I add one tablespoon of lite brown sugar to my chili mix. Also add a teaspoon of Tony Chachere's seasoning, very good stuff. I like venison better than chili made with ground chuck burger as it seems lately the ground chuck beef has a slight metallic flavor, for some unknown reason. If I have to use ground chuck, I brown it then wash off the grease by placing it in a screen drainer and pour HOT water over it to wash off all or most of the beef grease. This helps take away some of that metallic flavor. I then add the other ingredients.
