I bought my first crossbow today, a Barnett Predator. I have shot bows beginning when I was 9 years old and used to do alot of bowhunting with a compound but have really slacked off the last few years due to my neck and shoulder problems. I am looking forward to getting back in the early archery season and hunt like I used to. I have only shot it two times so far and it is totally different than what I thought it would be but I am impressed with it so far. Anyone have any pointers for a new crossbow hunter?

Carry a cheap bolt with with a field tip when you hunt. That will allow you to fire it into the ground or a target at the end of a hunt before you pack up.

After shooting it a few times and loosing all my arrows I really don't know what to think about it? It is not the same as a bow and I am not sure if I can get used to it or not.

I bought my first crossbow last week. Definatley not as fun as shooting a compound bow, IMO, but it will make a great late season tool. Late season I tend to bundle up more and still get cold and have a hard time drawing my bow. Until then, I will be out with my compound bow. Good luck with it and I hope you end up meshing well with it.

Did it put the bolt where it was supposed to and quickly? If it did, that's what it was supposed to do.

Unless you have a good rest its easier to be accurate with a compound than a crossbow. Get a good pair of shooting sticks and practice often. If sighted in and steady an xbow can be deadly accurate

I bought some more arrows and shot it some more today. My accuracy is improving as I am dead on at 45 yds and I don't feel comfortable shooting at deer more than 30 yds anyway regardless if I am hunting with a compound or crossbow. It may not be as much fun as my recurve or compound but at least it will get me back in the game.

I know this is old but I but my first one last year as well. Barnett Recruit Compound. I am hearing other hunters say that they actually prefer this even though its an Entry Level bow because of its size. Its very small axle to axle when cocked which makes it to maneuver in a blind. I will be getting 2 new ones in August

That is a good starter bow.
