A good friend and I started going out 2 weeks ago just about every 3rd day to a spot that has in the past produced Honey mushrooms but for the last 2 years we were either to early or to late so this year we are bound and determined to find them.
Today we found a rather large Chicken of the woods ( not to confused with a Hen of the Woods ) it was brilliant Lobster orange and in perfect condition, this is the first one I have ever laid my hands on.
I am going to cook it up several different ways over the next few days and I will report back with my opinion.
BTW no Honey shrooms as of yet.

I've only found a couple of meadow mushrooms in my usual spots. I'll have to see if I can post up a pic of another mushroom that seems to be taking over one of the spots though- can get a fairly large solid, wide head (6+"), no gills (white underneath) and with the same coloration on top as a meadow mushroom???
In the meantime I'd really like to find some of the these Hen of the woods and/or Chicken of the woods....all I'm finding that similar is on one stump from a dead oak we cut a couple of years ago-aren't these usually found on live trees??....Featherduster-I think I sent you pics a couple of years ago.

A word of caution: I am the kind of person that can eat the southbound end of a northbound skunk and have no problem however for the first time in my life I had a stomach ache after eating some of this Chicken of the woods. Most any good mushroom identification source will tell you that certain types of mushrooms may give you gastric problems so you should eat a small amount the first time and wait a couple hours to see if you suffer any ill effects.
Well I have never been one to pay to much attention to the "suggested warning"s and this time it got me. I battered some of the mushroom up in seasoned flour and I also battered some up in Cajun fish battered then deep fried them. They were sooooo good that while I was frying them and consuming a couple of beers I forgot about that "suggested warning" eating them about as fast as I could make them and boy did I pay for that one, I had a stomach ache that lasted for 2 days.
Looking back I think the mistake I made was I might not have fried them long enough and I ate them on an empty stomach with a few beers.
My wife who has always been cautious about eating anything I drag home from the outdoors said they were great however she ate a smaller amount then I.
What did they taste like you ask well......they tasted like deep fried chicken strips.

I once got the same thing as you when eating the Fall button mushrooms. The only thing different was that we found so many that we collected them in a plastic garbage bag and not the usual paper bags that we'd use.
Never again used a plastic bag to collect 'em in. I don't know if that was the difference or not, but the guy that I was with really knew his 'shrooms, and this is the only time that we got sick.
