Hunter dies after accidentally shooting himself MDR Staff Report
WILLIAMSON COUNTY - A Johnston City man is dead following a Sunday morning incident that is being treated as a hunting accident.
Garry Dawes, 53, was pronounced dead at 9:25 a.m. by Williamson County Coroner Mike “Junior” Burke. Burke said in a press release that Dawes died as a result of an apparent accidental gunshot wound while hunting with friends.
The incident happened at approximately 8:48 a.m. Sunday at the Grounds Hunting Club on Grassy Road in rural Williamson County.
“At this time it appears that Mr. Dawes’ gun accidentally discharged,” Burke said. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
The death is being investigated by the Williamson County Coroner’s office, the Williamson County Sheriff’s Department, the Illinois State Police and Conservation Police.
