So my youngest son asked me today, why do you name the bucks? Well, so far this year we have one 6point (Si), two 8 pointers (Notch and Nacho), and one 9 pointer (Baxter) on the game camera. I use names to tell them apart, but I don't really put alot of thought into the names. How or what does everyone name the bucks in their area? Ever name a buck to find out the neighbors call him something different? Attached is a picture of Notch with a doe. [a href=" "]link[/a]

I am not being smart in any way here .But I do not name animals I kill for food .To me only pets get names or registered farm animals .They are just buck deer and they get names like big 10 or short tined 8 point .Naming them gives them something they are not to me and that is tame or human .
I think either Disney or the video hunters on tv may have caused this trend more than anything .In the past animals that were killed were named after the hunter that killed them or the place they came from . Now they are given personality names or real names .
Just saying I think its silly to name wild deer just like naming a beef cow or one of the pigs we take to market .But to each their own I guess .

I think that's why my son asked me about naming them. But then we also name our market lambs. You get more than one it can get tedious if you are talking about them. For example, "the meat lamb has blood in his eye" doesn't mean anything if you have 3 white lambs. But if the kids say "fuzz has blood in his eye" you know which lamb to check. Out hunting, it's easy to know what buck someone shot if they say Notch instead of 8 point buck...... Yeah it's probably silly but I grew up butchering animals so I know what's going to happen, since I'm the one usually doing the killing.

Name to identify. Just had a buck posted on trail cam pic's thread that I named "2nd chance" as I passed him last yr , once at 5 or so yard's. He was a 120 class 10 pt then and I had seen him several time's as a small 2.5 yr old 10 pt. (Great gene's so I let him grow.) He has added 25 or so inches since and is a 150 class buck now. If he show's up at 5 yd's again he will not get a 3rd chance.... lol

I don't name them, but my wife and girls name all the mounts in the house. They always give them girly names, they think it aggravates me .. This is Victoria.. Don't remember the others' names..

For us bucks are usually named Shooter or not a shooter. We don't name our bucks we usually just refer to them by description "the big 10" "The drop tine buck" *that tall 8"
It is nice to have names if you are trying to track animals and maybe putting a certain deer off limits because you want it to grow another year or maybe that deer is the main target so you gave him a name for easy reference.

I have honestly never gotten acquainted enough with any bucks to name them. I've always hunted small properties so I don't tend to see the same bucks over and over. The ones I do see multiple times tend to be little fellers that are best named "idjit" or "dumb ass". The biggest bucks I've killed have been, "oh, hello there, very nice to meet you! Sorry for your luck...blammo". The only good buck I've killed that I had ever laid eyes on before the moment of truth was last year's buck. I had him on camera the year before, but it was the first time I'd met him "in person". I kind of like it that way. The element of surprise is part of what gets my juices flowing.

The Big 8, The G2 buck...that's about as elaborate as I get..I remember them photographically..and normally don't discuss my prospects with anyone, so no need to name them.
