Hey Guys, Ive only duck hunted twice in my life and I know very little about waterfowl hunting. I live with in spitting distance of the Wabash River which is in the South Zone. How long is the season in? What kind of equipment do you need? What kind of waders are sufficient for cold weather. Ive got guns and ammo just don't have any dekes, waders or calls. Is it too late for this year? h.h.

Oh no, another one crossing over to the feather side. Once I started duck hunting, I never wanted to hunt deer again. Wecome to the waterfowl world.

No kidding John....... he is quite the crack shot!!!! It's never too late HH!!!! Get some warm clothes and head South and we'll hook ya up on a hunt. We've got till mid-Feb to pop the geese around here with the Special Feb. Season. My advice, before dropping several hundred on a layout blind/waders/dekes/calls is to go a few times and make sure you like it. True waterfowlers worship the crappy weather that sends everyone else inside next to the fire. If the adrenaline of a flock of honkers moving across the field into your spread, or a wad of greenheads dive-bombing your decoys is enough to get you out in single digits, than you are one of US!!!!! I'm gonna PM you some info......

Thanks guys for the complements and info. Since the season ends next week and I will be in Florida in two weeks it might be better for me to wait until next season. h.h.

Come on now... you can't kill them if you are laying in bed... or if you are in Florida!!! Seriously though... If you can hook up with someone with the gear then all you will need is a gun, shells and warm clothes for a field hunt for geese. I'd offer to take you out myself but I'm still pretty new at it all 90% of my gear is at my dads right now... way down south. Worst you have to lose is a morning of your time. $30 or so in shells (if you miss a lot like me) and a few bucks for donuts and coffee for your host(s). Go for it! --hountzmj

Methinks the big flock that was flying over this season missed this post, but they heard the first one. ;D I'd like to go again (and keep going) but the wallet (and the wife) dictate that I can't dive into it headfirst at this point!

It is addicting.
Last year was my first .... hunting mostly flooded fields and timber for ducks. A pair of waders was all the clothing I needed to go along with my other warm weather clothes I already had from deer hunting.
A fella can wrap up mucho $$$ in calls and dekes ...... but even the best dont do you any good if you cant make it sing in a way the ducks like. For some reason I have had pretty good luck with a $15 Wal-Mart special duck call, $50 worth of dekes and a pathetic old mojo.
The first time you actually call a duck in ..... and know it was your calling that brought him back .... you will be hooked.
I was out Tuesday morning in waist deep water .... breaking through the ice with the butt of my gun. It was so cold my gloves froze to the side of my gun and the shells froze to the holder in my waders ..... and I loved every minute of it.
