I'm playing with the thought process and options for a deer hunting load out of my old style Vaguero. I have 100 old style, locally cast, 255 grain round nose flat point bullets. I'll most likely push 'em with Titegroup (that's waht I have). I know the benefits of a good hollow point, XTP, etc. But I wont take a deer with the wheelgun out past ~20 yards. What I have found, is that I tend to be more accurate with lead and semi wadcutters. I like the concept of shot placement more than "kill effect". Plus, I'm simply intrigued with the history of Elmer Keith and his load data.
Anyone here ever take a deer with "lead bullets"...something other than hollow point or similar out of a wheelgun?
Also, I'd be interested in purchasing or trading for some 231 if possible. Ive got Red Dot, 800X and Titegroup.

Nope, but I would have no concerns at all about using that bullet.

I have taken deer with cast flat point in .44 mag. They performed well for me. Bought my mold from a fellow called Ranch Dog, who no longer makes molds. However, other are using his designs, which are usually wide flat point with gas checks.
I certainly would not hesitate to use such a bullet in .45 Colt. They make a pretty big hole even without a lot of expansion.
