OK I am a decent caller, not the best, but I am in the market for a new call. Right now I have an older BG duck call with a single reed. I think I paid 20 bucks for it. I see all these expensive calls and I have tried them all. They sound really good but do I really need a 150 dollar call. Please let me know what you all think. What brands, single or double? Help me out

First,, you have to ask yourself the prime question...What is this call for,, killing birds or competion.... If you just want to kill birds,,,, the $20 call is perfect........

Pig is right in that an important factor in killing birds is learning to "read" the birds. This is done by alot of experience and really paying attention to them and how what you arre doing or setup is affecting them. Some days the birds are not very vocal and pretty wary and too much calling or even any sometimes will flare the birds, whereas some days you really have to get on them to get them to respond. Now to answer your question about what duck call.... All calls are not created equal. There are a wide variety of calls designed for specific reasons and uses like short barrel calls, double reed, single reed, reed and half, timber calls, open water calls, hybrid calls, the list can go on for a little while!!! The question is what call is right for your hunting situation? Calls are tools, you wouldn't go out and expect a flat head screwdriver to do everything, sometimes you need a phillips or a hammer, etc., same with duck calls, guys will carry a few different kinds to fit whatever situation they are in. I even have the exact same calls but setup different to fit different instances. I carry alot of extra calls in my blind bag for "in case". Now I don't know your hunting situations, but let's assume you are like 90% of the rest of waterfowlers here in Indiana, you hunt alot of ponds, lakes, marshes, and rarely the timber..... In this instance just a good hybrid hunting call will get the job done 90% of the time, and just starting out I would suggest using a double reed call. I represent Buck Gardner Calls, so I will talk with you about what we offer in each situation and you can go out and try whatever brands you like. For this type of call in our poly calls we have the double nasty 2, it is a double reed and it has good top end and also a good low end, if you hunt in the timber alot our Fowlmouth 2 is great, it doesn't have the top end, but it has an easy great low end, also the Mallard Magic is a good choice, all of these calls are $25.00 and under. Next up the line we have the poly Pocket Rockets available in a double reed call the Hercules, it has the spit tech warranty (if it sticks or you are unhappy for any reason you can return the call and get your money back or a new call), this call retails for $39.99 and it is a different design than the double nasty, it has our buck brush barrel that is easier to control, this is an awesome call for the money, just as good as any acrylic call!! Then of course we offer our acrylics in a wide variety to fit each instance. Is an acrylic call better than poly as far as killing ducks, NO! The design of the call and the operator is the most important thing not the material. Alot of guys make the investment in acrylics and myself included, there is the lifetime warranty, the heft of the call, and some would say a clearer tone, but I disagree. It is mainly an investment in a "nicer" longer lasting tool. If you have any questions on any of these calls from Buck, or any other call related question, I'd be happy to help you out. I still use a PRIMOS easy mallard.. Nice and raspy sound.. I also still have a PRIMOS goose tube on my lanyard.. Best part about that call is,, when it stops sounding good,, you throw it away and go spend another $15 for the exact same call..

I've always liked winglock calls, double reed. They aren't $15 but they sure aren't $125 either.

homeslice, You are in Lafayette? Sportsman's Warehouse should have them as well, you can go in and try them out. I know Gander Mtn. has them as well (at least the Greenwood store does).

I would suggest a double reed call. A primos timber wench or orginal wench tuned right is a killing machine. These are inexpensive calls. There also available in wood if you prefer wood over poly.

If you go to Sportsmans Warehouse, ask if Chris is working. He's the president of the Lafayette Chapter of DU, he'll be able to help with the calls and if he can't, he should know who can. Tell him Dan sent you.
