I am not a duck hunter but, as I sat against a white oak tree yesterday morning turkey hunting a pair of wood ducks landed in the tree right infront of me at 10 yards. I have never seen them that close before and I have got to say that is a gorgeous bird!

I think you are right .. The coloration of them puts them in a class by themselves...

They sure do look out of place for these parts don't they!! I would say they look like they belong on a tropical island somewhere in the warmth!!! They are definitely in a class by themselves!! Awesome birds!!

Prettiest bird out there, in my opinion.

They are beautiful birds, but I think Mandarin Ducks are even prettier.

Do we have any Mandarin ducks ever visit our area?

Do we have any Mandarin ducks ever visit our area? In Peterson's they are listed as an "exotic". So basically - no.

I had mine (plus Woodies) when I lived in So. California. I had to have a special permit from the DNR, and pinion the birds so they wouldn't fly. It was a lot easier to do that than to clip their wings 2x year. I got mine from Sea World San Diego. I heard that some have escaped (I guess they weren't pinioned) and they were starting to breed in the wild. They are cavity nesters like Woodies, and are about the exact same size.
