Today we found where somebody dumped a bunch of garbage at one of our pump stations. Among the junk was a nice looking push mower. The only thing we could see wrong with it was the throttle cable was broken off the handle. We loaded it up and I brought it home. I took a hose clamp and attached the cable back to where it belonged. I poured a little gas in it and yanked on the rope. It started first pull and purred like a kitten. Looks like the wife has a new self propelled mower. Thank you Mr. Litterbug!

One man's trash is another man's treasure! Great score! Three weeks ago I saw two plastic lawn chairs by the roadway. Not a thing wrong them! They were white but I painted them a dark green (only color spray paint I had) and placed them into my ground blind. Bet them dang mice wont chew through those so easy!

I wondered about that but the broken throttle cable made me think otherwise. Plus it was with a lot of other trash and garbage. There was an old fridge and a washer and dryer with it. It looked like someone cleaned out a garage or a storage unit. We find all kinds of stuff dumped at our stations. Treated lumber scraps are pretty popular. Someone builds a deck and dumps all the leftovers on us. Last year we found a truck load of walnuts at one of our stations. Several years back we found a young woman who had been raped, stabbed, and shot. We actually assisted in catching the guy who did it by getting him on camera, getting his license plate number, and his description. He was arrested the next day. We were recognized as honorary sheriffs for our actions.

The broken throttle cable is what made me think of the HOT thing. Most of them thug type fellars taint very mechanically inclined to be able to fix something like that and then since they cant home remedy fix it, well they sure cant take it to a shop to get it fixed either,, and that's usually when it gets dumped!! Around my parts if you wanna get rid of something you set it out by the curb and put a sign that says $10 on it,, if you just put free then they think its trash and wont bother,, but if it says $10,, well then natural instinct takes over and they wanna steal it!! Basic hood knowledge right there..

This past winter, on my way to Sears to buy a snowblower, What do I see at the end of my neighbor's driveway? A nice looking snowblower with a Sign reading "free, needs some work". I went back to the house and called him to ask what the machine needed. He said a new pull cord (it also had electric start) and maybe a tune-up. He expalined that he "didn't want to mess with it", and that he just bought a new one.
So I pushed it home and got into it. It started and ran but only on full choke. Cleaned the main carb jet and that fixed the choke issue. Then noticed it surged at idle. Cleaned the air mixture jet, and that fixed the surge. Installed a new pullcord and some skids, and the thing runs like new. Then changed the oil and used it all winter. I'm sure he never serviced or adjusted anything on it. The oil was black and the skids were worn right down to nothing. Funny thing is, it was the exact model I intended to buy, just a few years old. I fugure he saved me about $550. And now, I keep a close watch on the end of his driveway.

My brother made good side money while working third shift. He knew the trash routs and would pick up old mowers and get them running. Most just needed carb and spark cleaned fresh gas and oil and they were good to go. The rest he used for parts of sold as scrap. Kept nice clothes on his kids and him in ammo.
