I'm seriously kicking the idea around of trying to do a free lance hunt in 1 of the WMA's of Arkansas... Man would it be sweet to get in on a KILLER flooded timber hunt.....I am looking to add someone into our group... Anyone interested?
And has anyone ever done this? Any info would be appriciated....
I've got none of the details worked out yet,, just looking for any interest... This is not a guided hunt either,, everyone will share equal duties and expenses..

Don't hire a guide down there. Pick what area you are wanting to hunt and scout. If the ducks are landing somewhere else, move there. Sunshine, ducks hit the timber. Overcast, ducks hit the open fields.
If you do hire a guide, I know some good ones.

pigeon i not sure what the WMA stands for... but i have been down there duck huntin .... skippin this winter because im goin snowgoosin in the missou in March. I recommend ( and im sure this will get hammered) the week between christmas and new years or right in that area. I have only been there once duck huntin but my Indiana partners have been goin for years now and that is the week they go and never seem to have a problem shootin plenty of ducks. They do / and i did/ flooded rice/bean fields... i havent done the timber. Good luck!

I'll go a little deeper into what I am planning.........
WMA is the Wildlife Management Area's... There is a good amount of them in Arkansas.. Some are 30,000+ acres... I am wanting to go to that type of place. Some says for 30,000 acres there could be 1,500 to 2,000 hunters show up... Lots a crazy laws that we dont have here.. 5 min unload times at the ramp,, shell restrictions,, bird restrictions,, HP restrictions.. Lots of different things......
Guidind is illegal at these WMA..... So,, its gonna be all up to us... Myself I cant see spending the $4-500 a day to go down there and get it on... I wanna try on my own for a fraction of that price... And what a place to try other than 30,000 acres of flooded timber.
No doubt atleast 1,, maybe 2 days will be scouting.... Or if we could get a group together with atleast 2 boats going we could possible do better.....
Any takers?

You'd better check the regs on shirtless hunting Pige.... I'd hate to see some Razorback C.O. lock ya up for public indecency.

For $4-500 a day, you would get 4 star meals and lodging w/your hunt. For $100-150 a gun per day, will get you on birds w/a guide on private land.

I have a good friend that lives down there. I've been going down for snow goose hunts but never a duck hunt yet. However since theres no water around here this year, i might be going down the week between christmas and new years. I know friends that have went also. Hey somthing else to consider is ReelFoot lake TN. Its closer and they get a ton of ducks. I mean a ton. I have friends who have free lanced at Reelfoot and done well.

Well, ARK. has been dry also, they just picked up some rain last weekend. I hunt down there a lot, and I will say, you want to stay away from the big name WMA's. I go to the Dave Donaldson WMA up in NE ARK., they have flooded timber hunting. Pick where you might want to go, and contact the WMA property manager, they can really help you out., There is a $10.00 a day fee to hunt the WMA's, or you can buy a season ticket. But they can send you some maps of the area, and maybe point you in the right direction. You can only hunt untill 1:00, so you may try and line something out for the afternoon, there are several farmers that will rent you a field for the day, not bad, but you may need to watch their fields to see if the birds are working, and if they have any water. Stay away from anything painted pink, that means no hunting , they do not post it, just paint things pink down there. I hunted by Bald Knob, and Peach Orchard, had some really good duck hunts. I prefer to go in between Christmas and new year, but there are plenty of guys who head down there around that time also, GOOD LUCK

I'm leaving for Stuttgart Wednesday (3 day hunt) and will probably go for the last weekend also. My buddy has leased a rice field we hunted last year and he has friends that farmed corn this year. We also may hunt Bayou Meto ($10 fee/day). 1/2 hotel & gas, my food it'll cost me about $550. The hotels almost double their rates during duck season ($80 vs $130 + taxes).

Pigeon, How is yer Arkie trip comin'? We shot 5 Specks and 14 ducks. The picker said that most of the ducks were coming from private flooded timber, they sure didn't want the rice field we were at.
