HOly cow...... by no means am i complainin at all durin the post... for we just had one heck of a good time.
That bein said... i am sure you northerner guys have noticed our new push of mallards, shovelers, pinny's etc. Have you guys ever hunted such wary bird? These things are hard hard to get onto. The past 2 days we have hunted new groups ( just showed up on ponds). Yesterday they all wanted to land in the middle instead of gunnin range. Today we hunted a flooded bean/weed field. Found these birds yesterday abou 150 i would say.. Evertime we drove by them they would lift off fly around and come back. So today we set up on them... Great wind... great pocket for landing... heck.. great everything. At first light i bet we had 150 ducks... small groups just packing and packing on one another. We did not shoot ANY DUCKS out of that ordeal. Granted we were wanting drake only just for another goal basically. I bet only about 20 actually landed the rest circled for about a half hour... then left. We made a few very minor adjustments to the spread and waited for them to trickle back in. All mornin long until about 11 when we shot our final bird there were small flock after small flock workin us. They would circle and circle and circle and circle and finally one bird would drop down to investigate ( or got tired) . Buddy and i just looked at each other with the same " O boy" look not mentioning to our other kid hunting that this was not gonna be an easy day.
Like i said this went on for a good 3 hours.... and in the end.. after some gut bustin laughter and what seemed like extremely fun hard work.. we scratched it out. Ended with 11 drake mallard.... 1 hen ( Looooong funny story on her that would make no sense to you ). 2 black ducks... 1 gadwall and a honker. Probably hand down.. the HARDEST i have ever had to work for mallards but so rewarding at the same time. It seemed like if you would stay on them.... eventually a bird or 2 would drop down. Only 3 times did we get shots at more than one drake. But y in the world would they have such a hard time goin into a hole like that. ( proably 3 acres flooded). Good luck fellars!!
