Heard a ton of sandhills headed south today while deer hunting. The first wave shouldn't be too far behind them. You northern guys seeing any flight birds?

Hunted the Kank Thurs. and Fri., saw about 2-3 thous. birds flying high. It was my first time at the Kank and boy was there alot of skybusters out there...Had a good time with friends though... They said at the check in reports of 5 thousand birds in the area but normally this time of year is about 15-20 thousand...

Sandhills are thick in Laport, Jasper, & Pulaski counties. Hunting Laport Co we had sandhills wanting to land in our dekes during September, that was cool, and all around through October. They actually have a few that nest or at least stay during the spring/summer up there. I didn't believe it at first but they do have small family groups of sandhills up there dang near year round.
And just cause they were there didn't help with birds. Didn't see hardly any ducks, did have a trumpeter swan mixed with 3 mutes. The trumpeter was in our dekes after he chased my dog back to the blind!

Haven't been 15-20K birds at the Kank this time of year in awhile...6 to 10 years, probably. We were in pretty good shape a few weeks ago with all the soft ducks around, but most of those blew out. The area is probably at about 10K birds right now. Todd

In Fulton Co. around the Marshtown area, there are a very few number of birds that do not go south or north. Maybe GPS malfunctions, who knows, but I have seen the birds in January before. Marshtown is between Grass Creek and Fulton. There are maybe 5 houses there and the land is real rolly with alot of wet bogs and several large ditches and creeks going thru it. They do get enough to eat thats for sure.
