Whacked a couple of coyotes last night. Sorry the pics are not so good. I did one a favor. It was eaten up by mange and didn’t look so healthy.
I went out yesterday morning to a spot on my lease that I hadn’t been to in a while. I saw the mangy coyote and a bunch of tracks. It was clear that they were running a levee that ran about 80 yards south of a tree stand I have on the edge of a corn field. So, I decided to come back close to dark and sit in the stand for a couple of hours. There is a lot of snow on the ground and I could easily see a coyote on the levee or in the field after dark.
Cathy got a full body coyote decoy for me for Christmas. So, I put it up in the corn field, placed my foxpro call next to it and soaked down a couple of corn stalks with coyote juice.
It was just starting to get dark and I had been in the stand about 10 minute when I saw a coyote on top of the levee. I hadn’t even called yet. I turned on my foxpro and set it on some soft vole squeaks. That got the coyote to stop. At the bottom of the levee is a low spot where water pools. This frozen pond extends almost the entire length of the levee. Right now, the ice is thick enough for me to even walk on. I could see the coyote come down the levee and cross the frozen “pond” at the base of the levee. As he approached the edge of the field, I could see another coyote approaching from the west along the “pond”. The first coyote popped up on the edge of the field and stopped to eye the decoy. Bang flop.
The second coyote took off heading east straight up the frozen “pond”. I worked the action on my CZ and “woofed” a couple of times. #2 had the afterburners on and didn’t respond to my attempt to get him to stop. He was crossing a very large open area on the frozen “pond” when I got my crosshairs in front of him by about half a coyote length. Bang slide (for about 30 feet across the ice).
