Before too awful long, I want to pick up a good used revolver--- probably a smaller to mid-sized .357---- to have around. What would you keep an eye out for if you were me?

Yep, S&W K frame; pre-lock only for me. That lock is just plain ugly.

S&W model 66 stainless 357, and 2 speed loaders. Most women do not understand the concept of an automatic handgun, how to load, cock or clear a jamb. All women know how to pick up a revolver and squeeze the trigger.

Ruger SP101 or Speed/Security/Service Six. I would also throw in the GP100 even though I do recognize it's not exactly "smaller to mid-size".

S&W Model 66 or Model 19. Pre lock for sure, pinned & recessed if you can find one.

I used to have an Ruger GP100 but sold it and bought a Ruger Super Redhawk. Love it but wish I still had the Gp100.

I like the small S&W revolvers. I carry a model 37 regularly.
In a small, light gun my personal preference would be a .38 rated for +p over a .357. I have fired .357 in a light gun and they can make you gun-shy pretty quickly.
Of course, as you know, the .38 is an option in the .357.
I also have owned 2 Taurus revolvers over the years that were great guns. Very accurate and good triggers.

I have to agree with " parson " I have carried a Taurus mod. 85 38 spl. for about 25 years with no problems, and it makes a lot nicer gun for the wife to shoot if she needs to.She wont even attempt to fire the 357 in the same size gun, just to much recoil.

Thumbs up on the Taurus line. I have three, all have been rugged and great shooters. Good prices too. You can spend a lot more money for a gun that is only a little better, IMO.
I have a S&W Airweight concealed hammer .38 that is a good pocket gun too-my dad carried it for years, before he passed. He shot an intruder with it about 30 years back. It will be passed down to oldest boy before long.
Ruger has some nice deals too. One last opinion. If you want an automatic, forget the rest, get a Glock...
