Remember boys.... let the Suzy fly when we are out this week and later on this Fall. The drakes outnumber the hens, and the hens do all the work as far as making new ducks... so target the drakes if all possible! www.deltawaterfowl.org/waterfowling/vr.php |

Yeah and make sure you only shoot male geese to because Lord knows the goose population is really hurting!
Sorry to be a smart-azz here Travis, but I just think that shooting hens is legal for a reason. I am sure that everyone has there own personal opinion on this and I should probably keep my mouth shut, but I absolutely hate this debate. Personal preference is a hard thing to change.

Look at it this way Paul. If a hen is killed by a hunter he not only killed her, but the 6-8 baby ducks she would hatch in the spring and the 18-24 baby ducks her little girls would have and the mulitple baby ducks her little gilrs would have..........

But without the Semen of a Drake, is it not the same effect? Is the goose population suffering? Because I know i can't tell the difference between a male and female goose. Like I said, I hate this debate and it can go on forever.

Drakes suffer from commitment anxiety. As soon as one is sure his girl is knocked up- he'll move on. Infact, I believe a hen will mate with more than one male to allow the strongest swimmers to fertilize the eggs. More hens does mean more ducks. But with natural predation, the hens are thumped hard anyway. If you believe, letting a hen fly is a good thing- do it. I try to aim for the drakes, but don't always come away drake only. Kids- let em shoot what ever is flying until they are around 16. my 2 cents

I don't go out to shoot hens (mallards), BUT, if I want a duck dinner don't let a hen light in the dekes (if I don't have any ducks in hand) cause her arse is gonna get whacked (hopefully). IMHO a hen tastes just as good as a drake(mallard). ;D No apology!  |

My personal opinion is to let her fly. I try to only shoot drakes but on the occasion a hen will get smacked.

I usually shoot what ever. IF it flies it dies. Although I prefer to kill male ducks. ;D

Where's the fun in that!!! ;D If it flys it dies!!! ;D Just kidding! Good idea and definitely worth trying to pursue, sometimes things happen and a suzy gets cut, but definitely try and target the drakes only!

I won't discourge anyone from shooting anything that is legal, however for the better of the population I try my best to target only drakes of ALL species. Especially the bluebills, cans, and pintails. What you choose to do is entirely up to you. But don't tell try to tell me that more girls in the air at the end of hunting season does not equal more ducks. That dog don't hunt at all. |

Oh BTW, when it comes to the kids. Let 'em shoot!!!! Help 'em out picking out the boys if you can, but I agree, let the chips fall where they may for the youngsters.
