Can I buy a 308 bolt gun and have the existing barrel reamed to 358 hoosier or do I have to buy a new barrel? Thanks To have a rifle built to handle the .358 Hoosier cartridge, you would need to rebarrel. Also you might want to find a shorter action, like if you could find say a Ruger Model 77 in 7.62 X 39 m/m or another type bolt action rifle, in this caliber, this would be the ideal magazine length for a short cartridge like the Hoosier.

Just but an H&R .357 and re-chamber it.

Just a word of caution: If you buy a new .357 Handi, it will come on a SB-1 frame, that is not made to withstand the pressure of the .358.
However, you can rechamber the barrel and us it on a SB-2 frame.

I don't think that they do at present. Their website has info on offerings, as well as how to distinguish between frame types.

Anythings possible given enough time and money. One issue with proceeding as you have proposed is that the .308 has a longer chamber than the Hoosier. You would have to remove the barrel of the .308, cut some length off of the chamber end of the barrel,(the .308 headspace dimension is significantly longer than the Hoosier) then ream the chamber to match the Hoosier dimensions, then ream the bore to .35 caliber, and reinstall the barrel.
The more simple, and (I believe) cost effective solution is to rebarrel with a barrel chambered in .358 Hoosier. You could do this yourself on a Savage with a few hand tools.

Good going jlemmons. Glad to hear you got that thing up and running and had some success with it this year. Feels good to use a real rifle, doesn't it?

jlemmons:
What was your turn around time with MGM? I have a Savage Hog hunter in the .308 that I plan to put a .358 Hoosier barrel on. Have been waiting for someone to get a barrel blank in and get it bored. Been waiting about 3 months or longer now.
