Well, we went out at about 5:30 or so, running on high hopes, last night's beer, and about 2 hours of sleep. Got to our spot, noticing a conspicuous lack of other hunters on the lake around us. This used to be a coveted spot, but I guess times change.
Threw out our spread...
About 1 minute after legal shooting time, we started hearing blasts all around from neighboring lakes, but nothing from ours. After half an hour of continuous blasts, we started getting pretty jealous. Everything that came our way veered off into a channel about 50 yards south of us... gave our deeks some glances, but we couldn't get them to come in.
Around 8:00, two COs came rolling slowly into our spread to check our licenses. While they were there, we saw the only substantial bird movement we had all morning. Geese flying low over the lake, mallards swinging in toward our spread... not a lot of birds, mind you. But more than anything else we saw.
By 8:15, they were rolling out. They were nice enough to leave us with two warnings... failure to properly display boat registration numbers (they were lightly camo'd) and failure to sign the federal duck stamp (go figure).
A little bit later, I was calling at a few low flying honkers, seeing a bit of response from them (for a change). All of a sudden, my buddy says "Don't move"... I turn slowly to see a suzie swimming out of the reeds right next to us. He jumped her up and took her with a single shot. We sat out for a while longer, but had no other luck. Thus ended our day.
But there's always South Zone this weekend!
