Looking for ideas on where to start .....
Wanting to have a gun built for my dad but I don't know where to start. Am I better off just contacting AJ Brown or should I try and acquire a donor gun first?
Which platform? Remington. Winchester. Savage.
Wanting something lightweight and compact. Stainless.
If I get a donor gun which calibers should I look for?

I would recommend to anyone to try this yourself using a Savage rifle. I rebarrelled a Savage Model 16 in 270WSM to a 358 BFG. It was not very difficult and very satisfying.
This can be done on the model 10 type rifles or the Axis. Suitable calibers include .243, .308, .358, .30-06, etc.
I bought the barrel from Bryan at BFG Custom Cartridges. He even offered to loan me his headspace gages.

The only thing that would keep me from usingthe savage action is weight .
No doubt it would be the easiest action to do but I assume it will also make the heaviest finished gun.
I have not researched this ...... at all..... but I think I'll need some professional smith work done to shave weight from the action.

Also if Ruger still has their Model 77 chambered in 7.62 X 39 m/m this would work too. As for the Gunsmith building this I would contact Harry McGowen.

Got one going now, mainly to be used by youth hunters. Going with MGM stainless Encore barrel with the new drilling from AJ. Going to stock it with an adjust M4 style butt stock that is adjustable for any trigger pull a youth might need. Going to come up with a long eye relief scope for it.

Probably the lightest 358 Hoosier I have handled was an MGM barreled Encore.

I have a Encore with a MGM barrel, synthetic stock, and I would guess with the scope it probably weighs 7 to 7.5lbs. Light, and short.

Looking for a bolt gun instead of the encore platform.
I think I will buy a Remington mountain SS and have it barreled in Hoosier.

I think it will be pretty nice. Should be right at 6.5lbs without the optics.
Will have the action trued and whatever trigger work it needs then send it for a metal coating. Dad has a knack for getting even the best SS guns to rust.
Bed the stock after coating and it should be as close to what I want as I can get.
Now to keep an eye out for parent brass and bullets.

You may already be aware of this but you can easily create Hoosier brass from .308 brass.

You may already be aware of this but you can easily create Hoosier brass from .308 brass. Forming .358 Hoosier Brass wouldn't be that much harder than converting .30-06 brass to .308. Just purchase the proper form & trim dies & reloading dies and go from there. Be sure you inside ream the necks, if necessary, and you might want to anneal your cases after forming, if you should use .30-06 brass instead of .308 brass.

A Rem Model 7 would make a light platform to start with

The weight of the model 7 and the 700 Mountain are basically the same .... but the Model 7 is several hundred dollars cheaper.
If I went the route of a Model 7 I would need to buy a replacement stock where the Mountain comes with a Bell and Carlson stock.
The total cost of the build would likely come out about the same but I might be able to get a better stock going the Model 7 route.
If I had a donor gun already I would just use it .... but I have to buy something.
