Great story on that day, it was the last day of the duck seasopn two years ago. One of my former students had a chance to hunt upon his return from the fall sememster of college. He arrived late the night before. He got to my house and told me his motor was not working on his boat. Mine was already on the fritz, but we tried to get it working (this was at 4:30 in the morning in my driveway). We gave up - smelled of gasoline, and went"speed scouting" looking for birds we could get too. One lake we looked at through binoculars from a bridge showed movement on the water. We walked closer- mind you it is now 5:30. About 200 mallards busted up into the air. We drove back home, got some decoys, the dog and set up at the mouth of the channel where there is an island. We waded across the channel as my dog swam. tip toeing at the deepest part we actually made it across without filling waders. No birds flew back to us the entire bluebird morning, but it was so cold that our waders froze around us. We packed up at 11:00 and floated our frozen bodies and decoys back across the channel and called it a season. A great nap awaited my in our basement next to the fireplace. Amen!
