Thanx Woody!! Good info FYI - this is the company I use
Just a side-note....don't go through your regular insurance for your guns if you have more than 5-6 guns...and NEVER, EVER, EVER tell your insurance agent how many guns and ammo you have if you can't hold it all in your arms at once!!
I found that the average homeowner's insurance only covers the first $2,000-3,000 of firearms (based on garage sale values - most people get 20-30% of their guns real value) Anything more than that and you must get an additional rider applied to your policy to cover a higher amount. I have a nice 28ga Italian over/under that nearly fulfills that amount.
I (and 2 of my friends) have had homeowners policies cancelled when we tried to increase our gun coverage for what we had. Apparently if you have what "they" consider to be excessively large amounts of ammunition and weapons they don't like insuring you any more. And if you reload...don't even think of telling them you have 100 pounds of gunpowder in your basement!!!
I found out later (a second cancellation for me) to NEVER mention full-auto weapons or machine-guns to your insurance agent either. Within a couple weeks that gets you a refund check and a very short letter in the mail telling you that you need to go elsewhere for your insurance needs.
My agents were always great guys....it's the company and the underwriters that they deal with who are the devils here. So I always go to a supplemental insurance company for my firearm insurance just to avoid any issues with my homeowners policies. Believe me...it is worth the extra effort to find supplemental insurance.
