Beretta are great, but a new one will be half as much over $1k. The Red Label is another good one. They used to be under a grand new, but are likely just over now. CZ over unders are under $1k, but lack in quality compared to the other two. Try the Indy 1500 for a good deal or consider a used but as new in the box if you choose the Beretta or Ruger and must stay under $1K. A used Citroi is an option, but it's an American company manufacturing in Japan if that doesn't bother you. Same with Winchester.

Kentucky Gun Company has a bunch of Red Labels in stock. No sales tax as you pay over the Net.

I have an old Browning 12ga O/U 26" barrel that I use for rabbit and will use it for pheasant this year. Have you totally decided on a 20ga?

I have a CZ (Huglu) Woodcock Deluxe in 20 ga O/U that my wife got me for Father's Day this summer. Used it for the remaining season for skeet and love it. I have approx 800 rounds through it so far with no issues at all. I improved my skeet scores after switching from my REM 1100 12ga from teens to low 20's, but I'm still seeking the perfect 25 round. I used it on a pheasant draw hunt this fall, the gun did it's job well, but I didn't do my part as well and missed on the one rooster we flushed after 3 hours of hunting without dogs. Love the fit of the gun and the looks, I have no issues with the quality or finish of mine. (2010 serial numbered - first two digits are year of manufacture) I'm actually thinking of picking one up in 12 ga also, see link below. CZ Woodcock Deluxe 103 FE

Another option you might consider is the Mossberg Silver Reserve Combos or singles. Prices on the singles (12, 20, 28 or 410) can be had for under $700 new and a bit lower used. The combos, either 20 & 28 ga or 12 /20, can be found under $900-950 easily. Nice thing with the combo is that for a bit extra you can have a second barrel set to slip in when you want to use another gauge. They come with 5 chokes (Mossberg uses the Berretta Mobil choke system, so additional or different choke tubes are easily found).
btw....the cz canvasback is a fun O/U to shoot as well! Good luck and have fun.
