I was just curious to why the DNR uses Hiway 24 as the dividing line for the north and south zones. It seems to me that I-70 would be a more equal line across the state. Is there some special reason they use Hwy 24? h.h.

I don't know who thought up the zones but if we change our zones we lose our split and then the zones cannot be changed for a long time.

Just a guess, but most of Indiana's lakes are in the upper 1/3rd of the state and would be more apt to freeze up early as compared to the rivers that the rest of the state has to hunt.
But I think it is more to do with what stillwater said. The feds offer some options to the states and to get the most hunting days in a year I beleive we have to have 3 zones: North, South, & Ohio River Zones. You could probably request they change it to North, Mid, and South Zones.

What i do see is when the north zones in the ducks are sitting on the Wabash River, Huntington, Salamonie and Missisinawa reservoirs which are just in the south zone. Then when the south zone comes in they are gone. h.h.

Actually the reason is because of the 3 reservoirs. This will be my 34th season and in the past (when St. Rd. 18 was the dividing line) the NZ would be out in early Dec. and the Mississnewa Res., Miss. R & Wabash R, et.al. would be LOADED w/ducks. We've had some dynamite hunts in late Dec. & early Jan. since the change to US 24. IMHO I think the SZ/Ohio River Zone needs some readjusting. The "border" needs to be extended north a bit more and the season extended?

Ya know, losing the split might not be a bad thing: move the season back to where it belongs..... then suggest a split that is more central. I for one know most of the lakes are up here, but the season just starts to get good when it closes. For that matter, you should see all the birds once season closes. People down in LA complain about the birds short stopping.... they are all here in Jan. One of the best tactics I can think of is to look like an ice fisherman..... would limit on ducks and geese. - low crossing shots all day!

Losing the split will never happen as long as we have the fair-weather hunters getting surveys. You will also never see the shortening of the early season for the same reasons. If people weren't so obsessed over going out to shoot a wood duck and get out before it gets too cold we'd have the proper seasons. I don't mind warmer weather but hunting in it is a joke. Getting up at 4:30 to shoot 2 wood ducks is also a joke. When I hunt in October, I will not shoot wood ducks until later in the day so I can see if I'm going to get an opportunity on big ducks or bonus ducks.

Depends on what kind of schedule he has but I'm sure we'll get together and hunt it. I hunted with him last year down there and I think I got him hooked on hunting down there. As far as the golf, I didn't play a whole lot this summer since I was working on the course about 60hrs a week. Both of you guys should come down sometime and hunt. I'll be looking for guys to hunt with down at the draw a lot this year.
