Just saw saw birds v'd up flying south.at first I thought they where specks but then I heard them.they sounded like turkeys purring.I've hunted waterfowl my whole life in the carolinas and arkansas.and never heard that.are they sandhill cranes?do you guys have those here in indiana

Yep it sounds like you might have seen sandhills. In my opinion I always thought of sandhills sounding like coons..

I'd never paid much attention to them until last year. I saw a flock flying high and didn't know what they were and hadn't heard that sound before. What caught my eye was that they were flying south, but circled back towards me. Had I been making any call noise, I would have thought for sure that I was commanding the birds. LOL
Then they turned south again, but turned back north/west. I was puzzled as what they were doing. I thought the leader died and they were picking a new one. Then thought about wind current changes. Then thought they forgot the keys to the condo??? I didn't have a clue what they were doing, but was fun to watch.
