Do any of you fellas hunt with a 77/44? I've never owned a Ruger ...almost sounds unAmerican. Does Savage make a rifle legal to hunt deer in Indiana?

A savage is going to have to be a custom barrel job. 358 Hoosier ( yeah I may do it yet)

I own a Ruger Model 77/.44 Magnum rifle and have harvested several Deer with it, in Kentucky & three in Indiana. First time I used it was when I lived in Indiana, particularly in Northern Vanderburgh County, during the 2007 Season. Down here in Kentucky I now use my .308 or .270 rifles though; but for Indiana Deer Hunting this is a fine rifle with plenty of power and accuracy. I don't think Savage Arms makes a rifle chambered for it, but there are lever actions, single-shots, and semi-auto rifles chambered for it. Got to add, that I also own a Rossi Puma (Winchester M-92 Clone) in .44-40 WCF but only shot a Groundhog with it, but it will take Deer sized game with good handloads, hotter than factory loaded ammunition.

I have a couple 77/44's that both the kids and I use, both shoot very well with my handloads.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using proboards

Savage makes some nice slug guns, but I do not believe they sell any Indiana legal rifle calibers.. I have a friend who has a 77/44, he really likes his. I have a couple H&R's, I love them, as well as the Winchester M94's.

I never was much of a bolt action gun guy... .

I got one last year, Killed 2 does with it in the Dec. season. Double lunged them both. They went about 40 yds. and piled up stone dead. The one thing I did not like about it was the trigger had a very heavy pull. I bought a new spring on ebay and that solved the problem. Changed it myself a very cheap fix.

I had a 77/44, got rid of it cause I couldn't get it to group. I hand load, I tried just about every combination I could think of. I don't know why I couldn't get it to group. I ended up selling that and getting a 358 Hoosier. I am very happy with my decision to go with the Hoosier. My stepdad has a very nice Ruger carbine chambered in 44. That thing is a tack driver. We shot the 44 yesterday, I love it.

Maybe next year.

I would kind of like to have one, but I have enough IN deer rifles already I have enough trouble deciding what to take as it is. There also the issue of I think I'd go with one of Woody's Deerfield carbines first.

Woody's Ruger Deerfield Carbine is .44 mag semi-auto. 5 shot tube fed. This is an older gun that I traded a crossbow for. Sweet shooter with fairly mild recoil. A pleasure to shoot.
