We scouted fields Sunday night for a place to set up Monday a.m. ... found a couple good spots ... got turned down at one , but got permission on another ...
Here are some pic's of birds at those fields ...
We drove home and I snapped a couple cool looking sunset pictures by the farms ...
When I drove by the lake , the sun was almost down and it made the lake water look orange ... cool to see people still fishing at the public dock ...
And this guy was trying to get one last trolling pass in .....
Page break ....
Fast forward to this morning ... I hooked up with Skip and LeonK the Russian sniper ! ( I gave him that nick name today when he hit 3 pigeons in flight with a single shot and later got his 1st goose of the season with an amazing long shot ! )
The only thing that was cool looking this morning was the sunrise ... the birds didn't cooperate , and we didn't get any good shots ( except for LeonK's " pigeon triple " ! )
Sky starts to turn orange ...
Making some cool patterns in the clouds ...
Then the sun finally peeks over the horizon ...
Not much shooting in the area ... we did hear some from the river , so I drove by on our way to breakfast and snapped a shot of the boys with the river set up ...
Skip headed home for chores and after breakfast Leon and I did some more scouting ... finally around 12:00 noon , we set up in a cut field on another farm and laid back for a sleep ( expecting the birds to come out around 4:30 pm )
I did some light calls to let the birds on the nearby pond know we were there ... and a curious coyote showed up soon after ...
He was real spooky and circled the flock , testing the wind ...
He worked his way from my left side , to in front of me , then circled to my right ...
Then right after this frame , he hit my scent .... jumped in the air and took off back the way he came ...
After a nice sleep ... Leon heads out to RECON the pond ...
Leon comes back with the report that there are approx 3 dozen birds on the pond ... we wait a while and just when we were in the mist of another fenceline scout ... 4 geese head over the tree line and straight to the decoys ... we hussle into position ... they are closer to my shooting station and I manage an easy triple ! ... Sweeeeet !
Here are the walk up shots ... ( no need to bother Sally , they were all hit good and hard with 3 inch # 2's from a modified choke out of my Hatsun Escort Semi auto )
I'm standing there watching the 4th bird fly off ... when I hear a crack from Leons shooting station ... and to my surprise the bird crumples !! .... Man that was a long shot !! ... Leon " The Russian Sniper " , placed a " long distance call " of 3 inch BB's out of his Beretta 391 and they connected for his 1st goose of the 2007 early season !
Congrat's Leon !
Skip joins in later .... but all the rest of the birds steer clear of our location as the squirt out the back way of the pond ...
The last thing I saw that was worthy of a picture was a Leoprd frog that was hopping around my station ...
We packed up early , thanked the farmer and headed home ... another cool day in the field ! ...
