Yeah, this is not a prime quail state, our population is way down compared to what it was in the past. Loss of habitat over the last several decades has made a huge impact.

Eric Fosbrink in Trafalgar, IN has a great operation. He raises Bobwhite & Tennessee Red quail, at least he did last time I was there. Here's his info if you're looking to get some pen-raised. He raises a lot of birds and keeps very healthy birds.

There is a few places around to still get some action. I don't know about the Indy area,, but some of the FWA's around the state still get some action. And we have state run put n take hunts that are $25 per hunter. You can check and see if there is any openings left for those. Any of the pheasant pharms around the state are another option just to keep you from gettin bored,, they also work in a pinch!!

Greene county has some quail left if you're able to find them. I'm not too familiar with your area so I couldn't tell you where to go. Used to have several coveys around Bartholomew Co. but they've slowly disappeared over the last 10 years or so. That's the main reason I took up waterfowl hunting, and our German Shorthair has turned into a house pet.

Can a hunting dog also be a family house dog?

yes as a matter of fact a bird dog of some sort usally makes a better house dog than a house dog does they yearn to please their owners more it seems. Some would say no cause to much affection from wife and kids will ruin a good dog but i strongley disagree. My Brittanys are the best dogs I have ever had in the field as well as in the house.

I agree 100%. I know guys that would completely disagree, but our setter is a great field dog and a great house dog/family companion. In the field..... At home with my oldest son.....

Fellow Brittany owner here too. I truly love my Brit. She is the most soft hearted and loving dog. Sleeps between my wife and I at night. We have resorted to raising our own birds and releasing them in CRP fields to hunt. There just isn't anything around here left to hunt. We raised over 200 Chukars this year. They are fairly easy to raise and are not regulated by our DNR. So, no season to worry about. We may dabble with some pheasants next year. But, the Chukars have done us well. Here is Cabella "Bella" on her first hunt this year. She is 3 years old now. She does well with holding on the flush and not releasing until given command. She also started to retrieve this year. Not bad for a lap dog. She's got some good blood. Her father came from Bob Hardin's stable in Kentucky.
