Guys, I've really been wanting to get into, waterfowl for the last few years . The problem is I don't have a clue where to start. I've got some decoys a guy I work with was selling, got a good gun and access to around 300 acres of a mixture of crops and woods. I'd like to start out with geese and worksmy way up. Any pointers on calls, tips, tricks, decoy spreads, etc? Appreciate the help.

Hunt where they eat not where the sleep unless you only want to hunt a few times. If you have a decent population of geese watch where they go in the morning. If they fly around your fields or to your fields set out your dekes and hide well. The land into the wind

I went to a waterfowl workshop a few weeks back and enjoyed it very much. It was very educational. The field setup was very interesting. I'm sure that they will offer one in your area. I'm guessing that you don't live anywhere close to Indy, do you?

Birds are not around like they used to be. Back in the early 80's when I started hunting, they were everywhere.Hovey lake was the spot for geese in those days, but they do good to kill 10 geese a year now. Best thing I have learned is to look for spots, and drive around to see where they are feeding. and when you go out hunting, and do not see any, drive around to other areas to see if you can find any some other place. Some times the best spots I have hunted I have found after I hunted and went exploring. Do not call to much, and if the birds are dead coming in, don't call, that may flare them. I know there have been many days I never got my call out because I found a spot where they really wanted to be in. The days of a ton of decoys, no need no more, unless your in an area where the concentration is big. I used to hunt with 10 dozen goose shells, but that was because there were a lot of birds. sometimes smaller number of decoys is the way to go. You just have to experiment, and see what the birds like and want. They may want small spreads one day, and the next like them a little bigger. Just keep on trying and talking to other hunters after your hunt to see what you may have did wrong helps also, that way you can pick up some tricks. Also hunt with someone who has hunted ducks and geese before really helps also. Good luck and feel free to contact me if you want to talk. Brian
