With the lack of rain for the past few weeks mushroom hunting has been very poor at best, my friend and I have been out 3 times now to an area that should produce buckets of PaPinky or otherwise known as Honey mushrooms but so far nothing. I was able to find 1 real nice Sheephead about the size of a volleyball and that is it. Yesterday my neighbor lady a feisty older widow drops by the house opens her trunk and shows me a Sheephead that would barely fit in a bushel basket, she gave me about 1/4 of it which will make a great mushroom stock. I made her promise that when she sees the hand of God heading her way she must write down on a piece of paper the location where she finds these huge mushrooms because this makes the second time in 3 years she finds a monster and according to her she can see them from her car along the roadway. BUT THEN AGAIN MUSHROOM HUNTERS ALWAYS LIE.

Yesterday the same neighbor lady came over to my house so excited saying she has never seen so many Sheep heads as she just seen, she open her trunk and showed me several real nice ones. Then to add salt to the wounds she tells me that if I want she will go tomorrow and pick a couple for me. With these cooler temps and with all of the rain we had last week the shrooms are really popping up.

NICE! Now if you get a deer you can saute it in mushrooms.

It's been a good year for hen-of-the-woods by me. One place they come up towards the beginning of October, the other place (my property) they come up the middle to the end of October. Even with the temps hitting 27°F the other night they are still growing. Last year the one on my place was 15# or so, this year it looks like it will be double that size, and there are a few more starting to show in the same area.
With the rain coming late, I'm still seeing a LOT of mushrooms popping up now. Anybody finding those brown button mushrooms? They look like the white ones you find in the store, but are brown.
Now if I could only find the morels in the spring...... I've never found more than a few.

I may have waited too long to pick that Hen-of-the-Woods that was in the woods behind the house. I'll post pictures later tonight after I get 'em transferred from the phone to photobucket and let you guys decide. I have no idea what it weighs, I'll have to cut it apart and weigh it in pieces. It is 28" long and 23" wide. I'm guessing somewhere around 40#-50# and that's even after trimming off the dirty bottom side. I have a kitchen scale that goes to 25# and it pegged it easily.
