Fall turkey season
The fall turkey season kicks off with the statewide early archery (including crossbows) portion starting Oct. 1 and running through Oct. 27, 2013.
Archery season (including crossbows) resumes Dec. 7 and continues through Jan. 5, 2014.
The combined archery and firearm portions of the fall turkey season will be Oct. 16-20 in the following counties: DeKalb, LaGrange, LaPorte, Marshall, St. Joseph, Starke, and Steuben; and for 12 days to Oct. 27 in the following counties: Bartholomew, Brown, Clark, Clay, Crawford, Daviess, Dearborn, Dubois, Fayette, Floyd, Fountain, Franklin, Gibson, Greene, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings, Knox, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Morgan, Ohio, Orange, Owen, Parke, Perry, Pike, Posey, Putnam, Ripley, Scott, Spencer, Sullivan, Switzerland, Union, Vanderburgh, Vermillion, Vigo, Warren, Warrick and Washington.
Fall turkey hunting success is dependent on scouting and determining feeding/roosting patterns. Hunters can use these feeding/roosting patterns to better position themselves to intercept or bust up a fall flock of turkeys.
A busted flock can be called back to the area of camouflaged hunters who skillfully concel themselves from detection of the reassembling birds. Frequent fall foods include wild grapes, dogwood berries, beechnuts, acorns, or harvested crop fields where unharvested grain is sought out by feeding turkeys.
During dry years, wild turkeys will frequent permanent water sources mid-morning and late afternoon before going to an evening roost.
Hunters harvested 610 wild turkeys during the 2012 fall harvest and should be around that number again this season.
