On my route from my house to my lease in Metamora, I take SR 244. Just before you get to Millroy, there is an Amish school house. I've been by there several times when recess was going on, it looks like Little House on the Prairie! Today I snapped a pic of a baseball game.

A country scene to be sure.
Not far from my old stompin' grounds.

Really cool! A totally different life for sure, but similar in the simple ways.
I had some family in Millroy, but not now.
What city do you live in? I just assumed that you live in Metamora. I'm planning a trip there this Christmas season.

I think it should be pointed out that many in the Amish communities consider it rude to photograph them.
I think the longer shots such as the one in this post are generally accepted as OK, and as being intended as a friendly appreciation of their lifestyle, but closer shots of individuals are more often considered an intrusion and also a crossing of a line regarding the making of a graven image of them that violates some tenets of their beliefs.
A I understand it, photography is not a complete blanket no-no, but anyone wishing to photograph them should be aware of the boundaries of polite behavior in that area to avoid crossing that line, and the guideline may vary from area to area.

This pic was taken from a moving vehicle on a public road. I would not have taken it otherwise.
However, the fact that the Amish sell thousands of post cards to tourists with images of them "being Amish" takes away some of the sting of guilt for my taking this passing pic.

The Amish of today are not the Amish of yersteryear. Around here they are known as "Electric Amish". We see them do everything others do except drive a truck or car. They don't mind being drove though. They also know their way around a smart phone pretty good. A month ago, I had 4 of them tubing behind my boat. The boys had on short pants and no shirts.

The Electric Amish rock.
I listened to their first album many, many times.

I don't know much about Amish, but I do know a fair amount about photography. I no longer photograph as a hobby now that I'm attempting to hunt, but I do still sell some items. Selling photographic art comes with it's rules as anything. Typically, I would ask permission to photograph someone and even pay some of them; however it is perfectly legal to photograph anyone at anytime when standing on public land, even if the subject was on private land. There seem to be exceptions to every rule, and most photographers are polite and respectful about it, but obviously many are not. What is legal isn't necessarily polite, but Met's photo isn't disrespectful in any way.

I just think its really cool when I drive by there and see those kids having recess looking like it was 150 years ago. I've seen it several times and always wanted to snap off a quick pic to have a visual to go with the story. I couldn't resist. It's the history teacher in me!

No intent to say that your photo was rude or offensive, Met. You obviously shot from a respectful distance, and then fact that you weren't stopped and making it obvious was also thoughtful.
Just thought that a cautionary note was in order to others who might want closer shots at the same subjects and might be visiting a community where such were less welcome. 8^)
