ATTENTION : Mentors - what to bring
Mentors:
What you need to bring:1) The proper licensing for the youth hunter. Indiana laws requires that the mentor be licensed also. The mentor’s license does NOT have to be a deer license. 2) Bedrolls/pillows. We are a bit cramped for sleeping space so if you have a camper or tent please do bring it. Let us know if you do need sleeping quarters. 3) Safety harnesses and tie offs for both the youth hunter and mentor. NO ONE will be in a treestand with out full body fall protection. We will have some available there. 4) Rain gear 5) Hunting tool/ammo 6) Hunting Clothing (we will have some hunter orange items) 7) Flashlight(s) 8) Personal items (toiletries, towels, wash clothes, soap, medicines, etc.) 9) Whatever snacks you like for taking to the stand/blind. We will have some. 10) Lawn chairs for the campfire session. 11) Cooler to take home the deer meat. 12) Gutting/skinning knife 13) Pull up ropes 14) Bug spray. We suggest Permanon for clothes and a Themacell for mosquitoes. Some of the stands are in the bottoms and close to the Wabash so mosquitoes can get pretty heavy AND BIG TOO! 15) We will have soft drinks, but they might not be your favorite kind 16) Whatever else you want to bring We should have two ATVs there to haul deer out so you will not have to bring yours unless you just want to.

Woody, I know you are thorough, but I think we need to check into mentor license requirements. You have that mentors do not have to be licensed for deer, and I think I believe I remember that issue being questioned in previous years. In this years Hunting and Trapping guide it says the adult mentors "MUST posses a license to hunt deer". I was curious, so I looked at the youth turkey requirements and those too require adults to be species specific legal.
I just wanted to make sure everyone is properly prepared.

Correct per page 21..... Youth "FREE Hunting Days" are different per page 8

BTW guys,
I'm not arguing with you all but it would be good to get a clarification. This is not the first time the "guide" has been wrong..
The statute is the defining authority ..

I dont see any two ways about reading the "guide" . It says both must possess a valid deer hunting license while in the field.. I've emailed the DNR again for clarification..

I wasn't trying to stir up anything either, Woody. I just saw it and wanted to make sure everybody was covered correctly. Personally, I don't think the mentor should need to be licensed at all.

Rob, No problem. I'm glad that you did. The DNR seems to have screwed up with the guide. They need to get Morrison to proof read them before publication.. .

Reply back from the DNR...
"The person that accompanies the youth hunter must have a hunting license, but it can be any type of hunting license. The rule still says that it must be “a valid hunting license of any type that is not an apprentice license.”
