Well I made a boo boo last week and it looks like it might cost me the early part of bow season. I hit a rock a few days before on my rider and messed the blades up. After sharpening I put the blades back on and preceded to tighten them down. I lock the blades in place and attached the wrench. Well as I was torquing down my hand slipped and hit the blades. After going into almost instant shock I looked down to see the top of my hand peeled back. Initial reaction was to move my fingers to see if I severed any tendons and thankfully I hadn't . Off to the E.R. We went 29 stitches later I was home. Here we are 9' days later and after 2 visits to my primary care and 2 visits to an orthopedic hand surgeon they've decided it looks like I've possibly nicked 2 tendons. I can try to let it heal on its own, but the Dr. is pushing for surgery. He'll fix the tendons and do a skin reconstruction on the top of my hand. If I go with surgery my hand will immobilized flat for at least 4 weeks and then have several weeks of therapy after that. Being my age,32, and its my dominate hand I'm leaning towards the surgery. Just remember me in your prayers the next few weeks and hope I'll be back in time to hunt a little.

That sucks man, I don't know which would be worse, slicing myself or missing bow season. It might be time to get one of those crossbows that cocks itself w/a CO2 cylinder.
Also, can I bring my lawnmower blades to you next time they need sharpened? haha, sounds like you did a good job to be that sharp..

You will have plenty of other seasons to hunt. Get it fixed now, so you don't regret it later. Don't rush things just to make it out in the woods to hunt.

So sorry Brandon. This sounds bad. Yes, as a young pup, you should probably get it fixed right ...the first time. Can you borrow a crossbow from someone?

Sorry to hear of your situation. Definitely get your hand fixed right. Hunting can wait a while, it's not going anywhere. I am 39 and starting to wear out already. After 20 years of being a mechanic, firewood slave, 12 years of demolition derby, Dad to a 3yo son, and the slowing metabolism/lazy/gaining weight syndrome, I am starting the downward spiral of age catching up with me. I could not handle a devastating injury on top of the everyday aches and pains of life, especially knowing I could have took the time to heal up right. There will be enough bumps in your road ahead, do what's right!

Maybe you ought to plan on missing the early season and aim for the rut. Better to miss a month and get your hand back than mess your hand up permanently and lose future seasons.
Tough break. I hope and pray for a quick recovery!

If you must get surgery go to Louisville and have it done by Kleinert & Koontz, they're the best in the world, and the reason I still have my right thumb.

Tough break. Can't help with the decision on surgery or trying the slower healing approach, that would be a personal decision based on many factors. Good luck either way.
Of course hindsight is always 20/20, so you have probably already considered this, but when I changed the blades on my rider a couple weeks ago for the first time (always walking behind smaller mowers until last year) I found the LONG breaker bar to be very useful in keeping my parts away from the sharp parts. That job can present the need for a good bit of torque being applied in uncomfortably close and somewhat clumsy quarters, and it's better to avoid the proximity to sharp edges when torque is applied, if at all possible.
We all have a tendency to learn some lessons the hard way. I learned the importance of keeping both hands on the chainsaw a few years ago, after many years of occasional trimming using one hand. Missed the important stuff like major blood vessels and tendons and ended up home doctoring the cut, but it was enough to reinforce some ignored safety advice.

Well I wound up having surgery last Thursday. Once he was able to get a look inside he found I had actually completely severed the tendon on my middle finger. Odd thing was my tendons on my middle and ring fingers were connected, something he had never seen before. This actually helped disguise the fact I severed my tendon. So surgery was actually a blessing in disguise. Tendon and skin are both fixed now. Currently in a soft cast with all but my thumb immobilized and set at an angle. This will last 4-6 weeks. Follow up is this friday so i should know more. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers.
