I am admittedly ignorant when it comes to a lot of this stuff. But what is the purpose of Wood Duck boxes. Is it for "Wood Ducks" or is it named such b/c it's made of wood. Sorry for the dumb question.

They are specifically designed for Aix sponsa (wood duck).

It weren't dumb. You can also make mallard nesting structures with chicken wire and straw formed in a cylinder and put on a post.

I live in Southern Indiana. Would wood duck boxes benefit the wood ducks at my hunting hole? If you think it would help them I'd be happy to put in the time.

Yes. By putting up boxes you can recruit more Woodies to your water. I'm darn near Jeffersonville as I type this.

Winter. Buy, beg, or borrow an ice auger (if the ice gets thick enough). Cut a hole in the ice with it and pound a treated 4x4 in. Mount the box to the post . If its a lake you are better to do some box placement scouting during fishing expeditions in the warmer months so you don't run out of post before it is in the lake/marsh bed solidly.
You can also mount them in trees but water is usually the easiest.
